Just a thought but could you use a spring from an old rear bike shock and a valve spring or mobility scooter type of spring for the lower one.
If you can drive round corners, you're not going fast enough.

Yes, even just a piece of tube on it's own as long as it takes up the slack above the spring.

I know what you mean. The washer idea was for the tube to bear on to stop the tube jamming in the spring, but I guess wider tube would do that anyway

As suggested by Jim T, I obtained a motorcycle spring, made a couple of collars and fitted it in my sliding pillar. Unfortunately it still needs a bit more stiffening, not because of bounce (of which there is little) but because the car sits 1/2" too low at the front, so I reckon I will slide the previous spring down inside it.
