Just an update on my “improvements “. Extra cable operated calliper added with handbrake lever.
I’ve replaced the bulkhead behind the seat. This is now 20mm higher than my shoulders, giving some shoulder protection in the event of a roll. So currently building a lath/glass fibre boot lid, leaving a hole for the fake tank!

Framework ready to receive wooden laths. Holes are to allow air into engine compartment.
Wouldn’t like to do a whole body ! I’m going to shelve my Maserati 250 plans!

If you are wanting to lower the centre of gravity anymore then removing weight from the top half of the kart and potentially adding weight to the bottom half could prove very effective

Great work! I love seeing woodwork taking shape in that manner, thin lath work seems the ideal way to create whatever you want, I might look at that method to create a grp mould possibly although its anyones guess how well that would go for me haha.

Looking good David. I remember thinking the fill, sand, repeat cycle would never end on the Bugatti...worth it in the end though

I discovered during the lath work that the lathes would only follow two dimensions. In order to follow a compound curve I wonder if using say 10mm x 10mm lathes would allow the wood to bend in any direction?

I’m going to stick some aluminium on for a dashboard. How do you make those turned swirls?
Is it called engine turning?

I have done engine turning on aluminium using a bit of wooden dowel in a drill with laping paste on the end.

dad engine turned the steering wheel and i think he used either one of those circular wire brush drill bits or some sandpaper but either way it was in the drill press and he just lined it up with points of the previous swirl

I have an abrasive thing I use in the drill press. You can borrow it if you wish Dave.
