I used to use these for the job years ago but tbf all the other option get you there just the same.

dad engine turned the steering wheel and i think he used either one of those circular wire brush drill bits or some sandpaper but either way it was in the drill press and he just lined it up with points of the previous swirl
I used Scotch Bright discs that come with a holder (from Amazon)

If you have an old engine valve, stick a circle of wet dry paper the same diameter as the valve head to the head, stick it in a drill press and hay presto!
To look it's best, overlap circles by 1/3 diameter, and keep them in straight lines.

Depending what wood the lathes are made of, you could try pouring boiling water over them, it makes them softer and more malleable.
Obviously be very careful when playing with boiling/very hot water...I feel certain I didn't have to add that bit :-)

10 mm is very thick for that method. Even 6 mm is thicker than most would use.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!

This is one I did a while ago, I used an old valve with Velcro glued to it to attach abrasive. I drew up a grid on paper attached to an old board.

Finished off the ck today and pulled it out of the garage to make way for the next job...renewing the deck varnish on my sailing dinghy.
I’d like to bring it down to Stretton but it’s getting too busy?
Some pics enclosed.
If anyone wants to buy it...it’s for sale.

The tail turned out well.   Nice engine turning on your dash!   Is the tachometer a real one or mocked up?
