2021 Season. How was it for you?
« on: 03 Nov 21, 03:27 pm »
Straight off the bat I think we had great fun at a real variety of events this year. This was made possible by a few putting in a lot of effort to identify and arrange new venues .... thank you.
We will need to look forward pretty soon and identify a calendar for 2022. I suggest that we have a separate formal poll for this later, but it is sure to include repeat locations from this year.
In the interim can we collect any feedback/comments on events that took place this year to understand:
a) what seems popular and what does not.
b) any way that events can be improved for even greater enjoyment.
c) anything new that we should investigate.

It was an outstanding year for events Graham and I am amazed they all happened after the lock down thing. The variety was good with track days, show days like Bicester and enthusiastic demo runs at Brooklands. I also massively enjoyed the evenings at the Hotels with the boys having a few beers and many laughs. The only idea I have that would be different from this year would be if we could set up a track at Goodwood or one of the vintage/retro weekends. Pistons and props at Sywell is one example. I like the idea of a two day event with staying over at a hotel and a few beers.

The Shuttleworth Collection (Old Warden Airdrome) have a race weekend early October. One day set aside for aircraft and one for Edwardian Racers (cars and bikes). The ‘race’ is actually an individual  sprint down the grass runway strip - now 1km in length. I can make some enquiries if you are interested.

That sounds like a really interesting day to me, and free entry to the museum would top it off ???. Please investigate and ascertain a date for 2022 if possible.

Its a great museum that I have visited a couple of times and taken hotrods to the super nationals there. They have a fair bit of grass that we could possibly fence off and make a track and do the sprint.

Firstly - thanks Graham for co-ordinating our events throughout the year, and to everyone who organised specific events.  Incredible to try so many new venues this year.

26th May Stretton Circuit Leicester. First Meeting of 2021 - good to be back out.
21st July. Castle Combe Karting Circuit - interesting to try a different style of track.  A fun day.   Great support from the team there in terms of marshalling/safety.  The narrow track and continuous tyre wall made for a different driving experience.  Good to have the timing transponders.  For me, I'd not want to go more than once a year.
7th August - Brooklands Relived - Our first public outing.  Once the torrential rain stopped, the day turned into a great outing.  Everyone who went made a real effort with period clothing which was brilliant.  Loved the reaction from the crowd.  The mass start race was spectacular even if it felt a little sketchy at the end of the straight.
28th August - Grimsthorpe Speed Trial - Again more of a display than driving day.   The hillclimb was OK but obviously very short.   Lots of interest from the public.  Driving up the sprint track and then driving back down in formation at the end was fun.  I love the pre-war period of cars they have for the main event so was very happy looking around the cars.  Again, a great effort with clothing and our CKGB "paddock" looking the part.  Loved staying over with drinks and laughs at the hotel.  Its a long way to get there!!
11-13th September - National Microcar Rally Wem, Shropshire.  I didn't attend.
29th September - Haynes Motor Museum. Test Track.   A good day's driving.  Marshalling was minimal.  Good to have the timing transponders.  The track felt very fast.
10th October - Bicester Scramble - static display.    I loved the mixture of cars on show at the Scramble and again lots of interest from the public which was good.  Great display board produced by Andy made us look very professional.
26th October - Whilton Mill.   A really fun finale to the season and I like the track a lot.  Nice to have run-off areas around the track   The club house was excellent.  Marshalling was pretty much left to us, so felt a bit exposed from a safety perspective (although we did have two paramedics with us for most of the day!).   Great turn-out.

For the most part we were lucky with the weather - even if there was rain, it didn't last too long.

I like a mix of individual driving challenges like the Maybug medal and open track time, probably, more biased towards the latter.

Yes a good year for Cycle Karts GB I would say :) On a personal level - lots learned from of mechanical and tuning side and great to get to know everyone a little better. I think we have all learned about some of the potential dangers with our machines and the limits!!! but all in all we all got through safely and have some excellent memories of the tracks attended. As a likeminded group of folk it is nice that it all works so well and we have had a lot of laughs.

I have still to hear back from an Airfield in Northamptonshire that has a very large light gravel rally area we can use, but this will be 2022 now for sure but I am still I'm contact with them. We can also arrange to use the actual runway (confirmed) here for next years Corona if anyone feels brave enough!! There has been a couple of suggestions on here for new venues which is great so we must try and investigate them. Also if there was enough of us I have details of hiring Bicester Heritage test track for a morning.

I may talk to you Graham / Stefan about putting together an introduction brochure to CKGB (could even do a micro website) so we can send this out to lots of places so they understand the ethos of everything and we can explain what we do etc, insurance and so on - let me know and I look forward to 2022 and who knows where we will end up!!!

cheers Andy

I was looking at the British Motor Museum website this morning and came across a page for clubs. I think they do a special deal where there is a conference room available along with museum entry for a tenner per person. Hope this link works for you guys to check out and see if I'm right. https://www.britishmotormuseum.co.uk/plan-your-visit/car-club-visits/car-club-meetings-and-agms

[Hi Noggy. I've previously tried to contact you direct. I'm trying to understand if there is a definite opportunity for us to attend this event please. Thanks.]
