Hello Gentlemen,

Sorry about the delay in posting the latest updates and info here.
We are now down to the last 3 days of The Corona and the 2022 World Championship.
Here is what went down the last week or so:

==============================

(Update from Oct 23)

We are now in the last week of The Corona Speed Challenge, and we are up to 6 cyclekarts in the race at the moment!!
So this year's Corona is now a CKWC points race, and it will decide the 2022 Cyclekart World Championship!!
The 6 cyclekarts currently entered are of mid-range speed, and are very closely matched.

One of the Title contenders has already "played his hand": Chris Loader with his #1 Austin 7 from England.
It impressed, with a 45.5 mph average speed!!!
Thats only 0.5 mph off from matching Steve Vinson's #7 Ford T "Viscount Vinson IV", currently at the front with 46mph!!
Still, it is enough for the British cyclekart to take 2nd place in the race and open a points gap in the Championship lead... for now.
Main Question is: How many more cyclekarts will enter The Corona?

There was a lot of chat in the Hungarian and Argentinean clubs about joining the race this year, but no action so far.
The last Hungarian event will be Oct 30 at the oval circuit in Vasad, maybe we'll get a few Corona entries from that event to shake things up on the last day of the season.

Entries by Alejandro Ellena's #38 Ford A from Argentina and Ben Hanisko's #13 Austin 7 are also expected, as their last hopes at winning the championship rely on a Corona result. These two need to beat the British Austin's speed, as well as each other, to keep their chances alive!!
For the 1st time, cyclekarts from 3 nations are in a position to take the World Championship!!!
Will it be Argentina? USA? or England?

The Corona ends on Nov 1. That is the last day a video entry can be posted.
There is still time to join the race!!
The last weekend of the season is coming up!!!
Perfect timing to get a Corona entry done!!
It doesn't matter if you cant win.
Its about participation in a world-wide cyclekart race, and having fun with your cyclekart!!!

Cheers!!!

========================

(Update from Oct 30th)

Yesterday (Saturday) was a day of activity in the 2022 Corona Speed Challenge!!!
Three new entries received, and a new cyclekart stands at the top of the speed charts:

Make way for the #91 GN, piloted by the new "Fast Lady" of cyclekarting, Miranda Smith!!
Her 53.748 mph (86.5 kmh) speed is not only the fastest so far this year, but it is also the 4th fastest ever in the 3 year history of the event!!

The Smith family actually controls the 2022 Corona at the moment, as Zac Smith drove his #17 Talbot-Lago to a 50.641 mph (81.5 kmh), and into 2nd place!!!

Steve Vinson was the 3rd entry, taking his #7 Ford T out for a new run, and improving his earlier 46mph average speed by just over 4mph, to 50.5 mph.
But now at this stage of the game, a 50.5 mph average only gets you up to 3rd place!!!

Before this Saturday, the Whilton Mill event in England and The Corona's provisional positions had put Chris Loader's #1 Austin from England in the World Championship lead, with 63 points. The closest challengers to the British cyclekart were Alejandro Ellena's #38 Ford A from Argentina, and Ben Hanisko's #13 Austin from the USA, both tied in 2nd place with 53 points. Neither one has brought forward a Corona entry... yet.

But with the #91 GN and #17 Talbot-Lago sloting in 1st and 2nd place in The Corona yesterday, the points situation for the #1 Austin has begun to change slightly... for the worse. The current leading cyclekarts at the Corona are not challengers for the World Title at the moment, but their outstanding performance has dropped the British entry from 2nd to 4th place, and consequently it is now scoring 2 points less in the Championship!!! That would put it at 61 points instead of 63.
However no need to panic just yet.
The #1 Austin is still in great position, and is still the odds favorite.

Thats all great, but Ben Hanisko's #13 Austin 7 cant be dismissed. Rumor has it that he was also out on Saturday doing his Corona run, but so far we have not seen the entry posted.
The current points deficit he would need to make up is 8 points to tie the British Austin, and 9 points to out-right win the 2022 World Championship.
However, the situation as is still favors the British #1 Austin. Even if Hanisko can score 10 points with a win in The Corona, it would not be enough.
The #1 Austin would still be in 5th place, scoring 5.5 points, and would maintain a 4.5 points difference.
And that's if the #13 can take 1st place in the Corona!!!
Can it? Its speed last year was 53.003 mph, and that would come about 0.7 mph short of Miranda Smith's 53.748 mph mark in 2022.

Seems the #13 is behind the eight ball on this one, but if enough cyclekarts slot in between the #13 and the #1, things could change.
If the online chat over the last month is any indication, there may actually be enough entries coming to bump the 2022 Corona to 15 cyclekarts, and into a 20 pointer race!!!
Now that would really put a spin on things!!!

What will happen tomorrow and in the next few days?
Will we be able to sleep?
Will we have any fingernails left?
Only 3 more days to the end of the race... and the 2022 Cyclekart World Championship!!

Cheers!!!

Unfortunately today I got the first 2022 entry that had to be disqualified. It always hurts to do that, but I had no option.
The entry was by a well known cyclekart, the #23 Maserati "Boyle Special" Indycar.
The #23 is now owned by a newcomer to the sport, Mike Philpott, who bought it from EZ Burris earlier this year.

The Corona is a simple concept when it comes to the driving part, but the video production is usually where people make the mistakes.
In this case, the camera position was excellent, clear view of the road ahead, the speedometer was in clear view, with no glare or reflections.
All looked great, but the video came out all chopped/clipped/edited, and did not show the 2 runs in one continuous shot.
Also, the choice of speedometer had very small numbers, nearly impossible to see.

I am sure Mike's issues were due to technical issues with the GoPro and a poor choice of speedometer app.
But in order to maintain an equal level of transparency and fairness to the other competitors and fans of the event, this entry had to be flagged.

Mike had claimed a 46.2 mph average speed for his entry, which would be good enough to slot his Maserati into 4th place.
But since the video segment did not include 2 clear, complete, 30 second runs in a continuous video, I cant confirm the speed of the entry.
It unfortunately is beyond a penalty, and needs to be disqualified.

Hopefully MIke will be able to go out again today or tomorrow and correct those issues.

The Corona Cyclekart Speed Challenge 2022 - Results

Well folks, another Corona Speed Challenge is in the books!!

There was a lot of built anticipation for the last few days of competition, but this year that final stretch turned out somewhat anti-climatic.
Unlike the two previous editions of The Corona, there were no last minute entries received on Oct 31 and Nov1.
We were all hoping to see some of the Argentinean, Hungarian, German, Dutch, Belgian, Australian, German, and Brazilian cyclekarts join in the "world race". But none did, so it was again a friendly competition just between American, Canadian, and British cyclekarts.
Maybe next year a few new countries will join in!!!

However it was still fun, and undoubtedly a race of true gentlemen, as "ladies first" was the order of the day!!!
Miranda Smith takes top honors in 2022!!
All credit to her, as the "gentlemen" really had no choice. She was just too quick for them this year!!!
Miranda wrapped up the 2022 Corona with a 53.748 mph speed, the 4th fastest average speed ever in 3 years The Corona race!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

So for the 3rd year in a row, The Corona has a different winner!!!
And for the 1st time, it was a family 1-2, as Miranda's husband Zac Smith drove his #17 Talbot-Lago T26C to 2nd place.
Steve Vinson joined the Smith's podium party, driving his #7 Ford T to 50.5 mph and into 3rd place.
Full result charts posted below.
(and a few more runs)

And the bigger picture: The Corona All-Time Best chart now has 38 participating cyclekarts from 4 different countries!!
And drivers representing 6 different nations!!!
Lets keep that going and growing!!!

What about the World Championship?
Well, with no challenge put forward by Ben Hanisko's #13 Austin 7, and Alejandro Ellena's #38 Ford A, the result of The Corona confirms Chris Loader's #1 Austin is the 2022 World Champion cyclekart, with 64 points!!!
The 1st CycleKart World Champion from England!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hanisko's Austin 7 and Ellena's Ford A were tied at 53 points, and that is how they finished the Championship race, both in 2nd place.
Zac Smith made a late championship charge with points from the SlymeDawg Season Ender and The Corona, and put his #17 Talbot-Lago T26C in 3rd place.

There will be a seaparate post with the Championships results.
The final Cyclekarts and Marques Championship points chart is pretty much done. Just doing final checks to see its all OK, and should post this weekend. The Drivers, Marques, and Engine Championship charts may take another week or so as I'm still hunting for some missing info.
The 2022 Cyclekart World Championship had 180 cyclekarts and 200+ drivers participating!!!
Thanks to all, and see you at the 2023 Corona!!!

Other 2022 entries:

#7 Ford T (2nd video 50.5mph)

#23 VKC Italiano

#19 Porsche Experimental

#77 Studebaker

Another gargantuan effort from you Carlos pulling all this together.   Thank you!

So, how do the fastest CK's do it?   Is it their Colin Chapman inspired feather weight?  Is their aero package better designed?  Are the mild looking engines really super hot drag engines that get rebuilt after every run?   Perhaps the air is just thinner?

All good fun and adds a great dimension to cyclekarting internationally.

Great work Carlos. It has made the events we did this year even more fun. Though you'd think that very difficult because we had such a blast at Brooklands, Saunton, Sywell and Whilton driving our Cyclekarts, drinking beers, getting soaked, camping and having the best crack a load of Herberts could have.
A big congratulations to Chris Loader, Loader, Loader for winning the world Championship in one of Andys CKUK chassis that some people said didn't handle. Proved them all very wrong and then some.
If you can drive round corners, you're not going fast enough.

Yes, it was me that did say they didn't handle well from the original builder with negative castor. What this has shown is that with a bit of tweaking they can be made to handle well.
In regards engines, I do know that my Voisin was timed at 48 with a dead stock engine apart from governer removal and exhaust. Geared to all ow the engine to get into its' "happy " rev band.

Thank you all. It has been another brilliant fun season of events and shows. This is such an added bonus

Big Hand to Stefan for correlating the various event results and getting them off to Carlos.

I must admit , i didn't think the Final points tally, would fall this this side of the pond.

Lovely Suprise !

Carlos - Perhaps you could stipulate a specific GPS app to use going forward?
