Star and Garter Charity Cyclekart Grand Prix
The Star and Garter Pub, Chelveston, Northants. NN9 6AJ
Saturday/Sunday 10th/11th June 2023
Dear Member.
You are invited to the CKGBs’ first ever off road driving event. It’s going to be A great day of Racing your Cyclekart on a mud surface that has been prepared/graded which should allow a bit of rear end sliding fun. Along with the races will be some driving challenges such as a sprint (Maybug) and Slalom.
The cost is £40 per driver and £10 of that will go to the Air Ambulance Charity.
It would be appreciated if people could come on the Saturday from 11am and help set up the track ect, and if you want to stay there is camping at the far end of the field. Other accommodation is available nearby and there’s a B&B across the road from the pub called Middle Farm Villa.
On the Saturday evening we’ll likely have a social gathering/bit of a party with food and a few drinks either at the camp area or in the pub. There is also a possibility of some entertainment from a very good covers band.
Sunday is race day so hopefully the hangovers aren’t too bad.
The approximate itinerary for Sunday will possibly be like below.
9am Arrive and unload CKs’
9.30 Drivers briefing and signing on for all drivers/marshals.
10-10.30am Track opens for practice.
10.45-11.30am Maybug Medal sprint and grid positions for Heat 1
11.45am-12.05pm Heat 1
12.30-12.50pm Heat 2 reverse grid of results from heat 1.
Lunch.
The Pub does great food with a roast on Sundays and “weather pending” a BBQ on the Day. This can be pre booked a couple of days before the event to see if the weather will be kind enough for a BBQ as food will need to ordered by the pub on the Wednesday before. If a BBQ does happen there may be a chance of a food voucher for drivers.
1.50-2.20pm Slalom
2.30-2.50pm Heat 3
3pm-3.40pm Grand Prix Final
3.45-4.15pm free practice
4.30 Presentations on Podium.
If you wish to participate, Please register interest in the first instance with a message on here or to the committee and an application form will be sent to you with payment instructions. All drivers will be required to fill out there personal and CK details. There will be a commentator on the day so please add some interesting facts/lies to the form also. This only for fun so nothing too technical is needed.
Please remember to bring your Nora Licence and CKGB membership card when signing on at the briefing. You won’t be allowed on track if you don’t attend the briefing.
We look forward to seeing you,
Regards, CKGB events.
Please see pdf below for track layout.

Can’t wait for our first fully hosted CKGB event - it’s a yes from me :)
-
Bother and damnation! I would have finished one of the collection for this event! Except that it's the same 2 days as the Morgan Three Wheeler club event at Curborough, as well as which SWMBO has booked a holiday too.
I am positive that it will be an enjoyable event.
-
Yes please,
The B&B is already fully booked! So I might be camping.
Mark

Yes please. Will be there early on Saturday to help with setting it up and camping Saturday night 🤗
-
That's great, Tim and Ian. I will add you to the list.
Also if anyone wants to come along on Saturday/Sunday to help set up and have a few beers after would be very welcome.
We will need marshals ect on the Sunday.
This is the only event this year that is solely run by the CKGB and your support is greatly appreciated.
-
I’m planning to come. Will there be space for our little caravan ?
-
Hi Glynn, Glad your coming. Yes there is space for your little caravan.
-
For application forms please contact Chris Slade at ckgbmembership@gmail.com and he will send you one.
-
It would be nice if we had a couple of trophys to hand out at the end. To save some money, I am happy to make one or two like I did at Whilton, probably using old engine bits and the like. If anyone else wants to knock something up then post on here and we'll hopefully get enough to have one for the different races/games. e.g. I have some old valves that I could bend into weird shapes for a bent valve trophy for the kart that broke down the most or something like that.
-
Hi Jim ,I've booked the weekend off work so will come along Saturday to help set up .we will camp over and hopefully my cyclekart will be ready for the Sunday .Jane will come along to as a marshall
-
That's great Andy and jane, Only the driver needs to pay and enter using the regs from Chris Slade. Any help on the sat/Sun will be appreciated.
-
Hi Andy, (Dunn). It will be much appreciated If Jane or anyone else for that matter wants to help marshal. There is a free online course that gives you a certificate for marshalling. https://www.motorsportuk.org/volunteers/marshals/online-marshals-training/
-
Andy has done another fantastic poster for the event. Please share.
-
Things are moving along well with the organisation of this event. We are trying to capture a vintage atmosphere and there will be vintage Motorsport banners, bunting, festoon lights which should be great for photos of karts and drivers. (Please wear your vintage kit so you look the part). Anyone who wants to be involved please let me know either as a Marshall/helper or driver. Btw drivers need to be a club member and have a Nora license. This is going to be an incredible weekend and the best fun with a bloody good bunch of people. We're looking forward to seeing you there.
-
The poster, please share.
-
Just a quick reminder people that to enter as a driver you need your club membership and Nora licence. Please contact Chris Slade ckgbmembership@gmail.com
Event race entry forms are also available from Chris for members at ckgbmembership@gmail.com
Get your entry forms in asap as it is already starting to fill up.
If you would like to marshal/help out with stuff that will be greatly appreciated and here is the link for the MSUK online marshal course.
https://www.motorsportuk.org/volunteers/marshals/online-marshals-training/
There is a spectator area and anyone on here is welcome to come and see the cyclekarts in action. £1 charge going to the Air Ambulance charity.
-
Great cause Jim, are you going to be sorting out a just giving page for this event for those of us who unfortunately can't make it 😭
-
Cheers Jim, The pub is doing the charity side of things but I will look into the just giving thing.
Here is a link to their website gallery so you guys can see the aerial view of the pub and field.

-
Jim we also plan to be along ( booked a few nights in Northampton so no to far away ) - won’t have a kart ready but happy to help out. What are the arrangements for Sunday lunch is booking through you or direct with the pub? Cheers. Ian
-
hi Ian, glad you're coming along. It will be best to book Sunday Lunch with the pub, I am going to hang on because if the weather is going to be sunny and warm(I'm sure it will) there will be a BBQ also. I will be looking closely at the weather just before the event and should know by the Wednesday before if the pub needs to get BBQ shopping in. I will be reserving a roast on the wed evening if it looks like rain.

Jim you are having a roast in between the race? Haha 😆

It was great to see some CKers' yesterday at Silverstone and have a chat about the S&G charity grand prix. Thanks to those who volunteered to make some trophy's for races. They're going to be pretty wacky by the sound of it. Things are coming along with new ideas for fun things to do with a CK and the scene setting accessories to give the track a truly vintage look. The working party day is starting to become more party and less working, judging by some of the conversations yesterday, which is nice. So folks get your karts done, get your club membership and Nora and join us for possibly the greatest day of your life.(ok the last part might be over selling it a bit)
-
We have a new rule regarding tyres on the day. Moto-X tyres won't be permitted as they'll tear up the ground and give an unfair advantage on the other drivers. Basically the tyre tread blocks need to be quite a bit bigger than the gaps between. Sorry about this folks but we have had a chat and this is favoured opinion.
-
Jim....Road pins are on the van, Pod bound this afternoon. See ya there !
-
That's answered my question that I was just about to ask , better order some tyres for the back
-
That's answered my question that I was just about to ask , better order some tyres for the back
I have a few 2.50 tyres if you’re interested £25 for two and I am only in Northampton or can post at cost 👍
-
Hi Andy. If you can bring four to the S&G I will have cash. Cheers.

I could collect one evening in the week T shirt arrived today as well.

Important message!!
Everyone, it's time to get your entries in for this great event! From the middle of next week I am away on hols for a couple of weeks, so entries will languish in my inbox until my return, and that's quite close to the day! So:
If I have already sent you an entry form, it's time to send it in!
If you want to receive an entry form, email me at - ckgbmembership@gmail.com right away!
DON'T PUT IT OFF, NOW IS THE TIME!
-
The BBQ is booked and the ice cream van is booked. There is possibly going to be a commentator so bring plenty of info and anecdotes about yourselves and your karts. I have a few vintage style oil banners and some bunting to create a vintage ambience. I'm currently working on a trailer made from a 1928 Morris minor front dropped axle and wheels that could be used to display some sort of vintage trinketry if anyone has some to bring along.
A couple of us are going up there today to start prepping the ground for a smooth track.
So people get those entries in for what is looking like a great weekend.
-
Brilliant, really looking forward to this 🤗😎😁
-
Well we had a good old laugh at starting to lay out the track, spent most the day rollering (around) and sorting the drainage out in the lower field!! but by tea time we had just about got something good happening - a few pics to amuse you all and a small video of the track to follow to help you all see what its like, this will be a fun event I am sure.
If anyone wants to lend a hand over the weekend 10th/11th June please get in contact with Jim Tanner CKGBevents@gmail.com as there will be lots to do
Cheers
-
;D Looks like you are having far too much fun !! Well done, the track looks really good !!
-
Andy, was the go pro footage any good?
-
Yes Mate I am editing everything together and will have something this week
-
A little video to amuse you all and to see the track and what to expect for the S&G GP

-
Good job chaps, better check all my nuts are tight and lock up my axle.
-
We have a commentator for the races so can the people who are bringing a kart to the S&G please give me some info on your Kart and yourselves. It doesn't need to be serious or to fact heavy. I can always make up stuff about you if you can't think of what to write. So get your details to me ASAP.
-
Commentary for mine Jim, sorry I can't make it :-(
" Well the cyclekart known as slippery Jim is nowhere in sight! Literally nowhere to be seen at all, added stealth technology by the driver painting his kart with blended octopus and chameleon corpses makes it hard for the opposition to see just how well he's doing! His driver skillfully avoids all photographic evidence as he probably rounds the bends with great aplomb and not much of a to-do, we think. The plucky three wheeler is powered by three hamsters in a wheel coaxed gently around with a copy of play-hamster on a string at idle and uses a vicious pixie dressed in bondage gear as a cox when the accelerator is floored - we hear he may acquire a mystic supercharger for future events. Apart from enjoying Viking re-enactment and the illegal transportation of small Australian birds hidden in lycra, the driver, also known by the alias Jim, pingu (for some unknown reason) and Ivar Thor-Heilbo, has been driving for nearly a season and is gaining momentum - slowly, and we mean slowly"
Slippery Jim is proudly sponsored by Albert Fegworthys' seaside emporium and general knick-knackery.
-
Great work by the venue team.
-
NEWS !! Baffled experts descend upon sleepy Northamptonshire village after irregular crop circles appear in pub field.
-
Hi Jim,
I've just started putting this together for the website. I will be at the Star & Garter event so you can pick out anything useful for the commentary.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Cheers
Glynn
-
Thanks for the info Glynn, Much Appreciated, I will print it off and pass it on to the commentator. I am just waiting for the rest of the entries, so get writing some old cobblers chaps and send it to me.
-
Here is my first draft and probably the last of my commentators notes, I have also done loads for cyclekarts in general like rules and build ect, so drivers please get me yours asap.
Kart No. 8 1935 Dodge Baquet driven by Jim Tanner
Jim has been involved with the hobby for nearly 5 years.
This is his first Cyclekart build but has built many other cars and bikes over the years. All the cars got fitted with a big V8 engine so the little 200cc engine in the cyclekart was a lot easier on the back getting it in.
He liked the cyclekart idea because it is so simple to build and therefore should be quick to get it finished. Mine took just under 6 months. Having a Partner who lets me get on with things and keeps me fueled helps more than I can say.
Jim Said, I built it to drive it, not just to look at or parked in the garage under a cover. It’s one of those hobbies where you can make a model/toy and actually drive it. I have given it a lot of abuse over the years causing many things to have broken and/or fallen off. I am sure the field today will take its toll on the components and tinkering will be needed afterwards.
His achievements with the club are:- King of the Beach at Lundy Flyers Saunton Sands Beach race, Going to Brooklands and driving on the historic track there, Second in the Cyclekart world championship 2021, The CKGB award for taking it all too seriously, 2018-present.
Other Awards.
Winner of the East Midlands Most Boring Bloke Championship 1997-1998. A small chap from Leicester has been crowned it ever since with landslide victories.
-
I'll take that on the chin Jim. .... you can obviously stoop that low !! :D
Wow, you were serious when you said you wanted drivers to write a load of old cobblers!! I think your first ever drive was in my CycleKart in 2019!! ;)
-
Hi Jim ,here's my commentators notes
1921 Type 13 Brescia Bugatti.
New to the club and cyclekarts is Andy Dunn's interpretation of a type 13 Bugatti .
He has no experience in karts having for the last 10 yes built gravity powered soapboxes including a snail and a fire engine to race at the kophill hill climb
Seeing the cyclekarts at Lundy he decided to have a go himself
Built in a farm workshop using basic tools and know-how,it's still work in progress but getting there, and after today's inaugural outing the welding and Andy's back will still be holding together
The kart is running a standard lifan engine driveng through a Hutt variable torque converter..
Hopefully the commentator can use some of this .
Andy Dunn
-
Great stuff, Thanks Andy. I will copy and print it out for the commentator. Do you have a number for your CK registered on here? I had a quick look but couldn't see one.
-
Assuming I can get it fixed, Marek will be driving the Bugatti. Will the write-up from the club website do for commentary - I know it's a bit long? https://www.cyclekartsgb.com/stefans-bugatti
-
Hi Jim, how many entrants so far .Graham A.
-
Hi Jim ,I don't have a number at the moment,I sent a message to Stefan asking for 32 My membership number but don't think it went,I'll send another .I believe this number is free at the moment
-
Hi Jim ,
It's official I'm now number 32
-
Hi Jim, how many entrants so far .Graham A.
Hi Graham, I think 8 or 9 entries so far.
-
After another visit to the field yesterday with Andy Boulton and Colin Stringer (who isn't a member of the club but a massive help to this event with the prep and marshalling on the day) we cleared the field of many many tyres for the grass cutting later this week. The course we rolled is still very smooth and has dried hard because of the lack of rain which should make it perfect for some drifting round the corners and kicking a bit of dust up.
BTW If anyone else wants to help with some marshalling, let me know.
-
My write up Jim.
-
Heres my thruppence worth Jim..
Poppa Simon built this saucy Italiano GP cyclekart from the offcuts of building a V8 drag race car.
The only new parts were the engine and transmission, the rest from eBay and mates.
Its a lovely, sensual, Italian body, a labour of love we're told. My theory is its what turned Simon's hair grey!
Driving today is young Flyngio in his 3rd cycle kart season. Will his first outing on a grass track see him tame the frisky, pretty Italian or end in a crazy under/over steer wild slide into the ruff ?
-
Thanks Graham and Simon for your light hearted and fun notes. I am popping into the Star and Garter tonight after work to do a final sweep of the field for any straggling tyres before the farmer comes in with his gang mower. The commentator is possibly going to be there and hopefully we can chat about the drivers and CK's. I also have other CK related errands to get done this evening so I may be late or not have time for the zoom later.
-
My write up Jim.
Nice write up Graham.
-
Hi Jim, I emailed my commentators notes to you, really looking forward to this event 😄
-
Thanks Ian, They are printed off and will be given to the commentator.
Only 10 days to go people!
-
Motorhome passed its MOT today, so getting taxed tomorrow and will be there early Saturday to help set it up, can't wait 😄
-
Good news Ian, I look forward to catching up and having a beer with you.
-
I have just cancelled my room booked at the Villa B&B (via Booking.com) as I no longer need it.
If anyone is looking for a comfortable bed, be quick, snap it up!
-
The weather is looking spot on for Sunday and a warm evening for camping on the Saturday. We shouldn't need a fire pit but if anyone wants to bring one along that'll be good. Also if anyone wants to bring a BBQ that would be good. I will be putting up loads of festoon lights on 8ft posts around the camping area so we can party till late if necessary.
-
The Star and Garter pub has very kindly been onto Radio Northampton and they have been publicising the event this week.
-
What time are you planning on getting there Saturday to set up Jim, hopefully I should be there by 12ish
-
Hi Andy, 12ish should be great if you can get there then. I think we'll probably have a lunch break about 1. It should be a lot of fun and giggles on Sat without having to work too hard and flog ourselves to a heart attack. Sunday should be a relaxed fun day with some semi competitive driving in short heats. There'll be plenty of breaks between for refreshments and socialising.
I was checking the field last night and it's looking tip top for us. With the grass cut it makes the camping area bigger than I thought and I'm sure we are going to have a fab night with mucho banter.
I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up which should settle my nerves hopefully because they're shot with worry about this event failing. This is the first solely run CKGB event and it's been a mountain of work for me, luckily I have had support from a few CKGB members and The Rushden Lambretta Club.
Only two more sleeps and one of those will be on site.
-
just finished fitting the new wheels and tyres to Jane, then completed all the safely checks, so just need to put the panels back on and put her back on the trailer. We have mini firepit but can't find it at the moment🤔
Will be there between 11 and 12 tomorrow to help set up 🤗😎
-
Wish I could attend this one. It sounds like it will be a blast.
Just thinking, do you have any way to water the track ? With all this dry weather we have lately it could get quite dusty.
-
I would like to say a huge thankyou to everyone who came along to the Star and Garter. What a fantastic group of people we had that made it such a successful weekend. You guys were brilliant on and off track and Bill was a superstar on Saturday going beyond as he wasn't able to be there on the Sunday to have a drive. Stefan was an excellent Clerk of the Course keeping things in order along with Anelia who gave us first aid cover. I don't think she had to repair anyone which is how I like it. The Rushden Lambretta lads were also a massive help in many ways and did a fine job of Marshalling. The Star and Garter were very hospitable and we certainly had a great laugh in the pub with our meal and beers on Saturday night. I had a great weekend and am so grateful of all your support.
-
Thank you JIM for putting a great event. From a spectators view every one worked hard enjoying the day. EXCELLENT.👍🇬🇧.Graham A and Jill.
-
Absolutely cracking event all round, good light-hearted fun from start to finish, a credit to all involved 😎🤗😀
-
Thanks to Jim and everyone else involved in the setting up and organisation of this fantastic event. Hope we can do it again next year.
Glynn & Julie
-
Pictures are now up in the gallery of the event for those not on social media. Many thanks to Brian Gates for doing the photos.
