Title: Guide to Brakes
Post by: StefanN on 17 Jan 21, 02:07 pm
At a builders meet in 2020 we agreed it would be helpful to have some guidelines to brake systems for cyclekarts.  The attached document will, hopefully, provide some help.

Remember:
Always ask if you're not sure.
Test your brakes under a range of conditions and check them regularly

One option not mentioned is using the chain sprocket as a brake disc is that something that anyone has used with any success ??.

Not a good idea if you use chain lube.

If you have one wheel doing the braking, make sure you can lock it up, slow the Kart down and stop, an endless number of times. You need to be able to slow down often and for a long trime. heat is the enemy!
We have had our fair share of 'near do's' with inadequate brakes.

Don't know about anyone else's sproket but...
my chain sprocket is covered in a plastic(ish) substance, don't think it would be gripped
by the brake pads very well.
