Title: Sywell Classic pistons and props 24-25 sept 2022
Post by: jim on 03 Mar 22, 05:57 am
I have applied for a club stand at this show http://www.sywellclassic.co.uk/ with the intention of a display and perhaps setting up a course on the runway for roundy roundy and also doing the corona speed challenge. This is a full weekend show with an excellent art deco hotel (and BAR) or camping. There are bands playing on the Sat evening. Entry for club members is 5 per car which includes 2 tickets for the whole weekend. Camping is 40. There are prizes for best club ect. They are doing sprints up the runway so if your feeling athletic have a go at that lol. I might take my dragster which should be a bit quicker than running and less effort. This is usually an excellent weekend show with plenty going on so put your names down so i can give the organisers some numbers.
cheers Jim

Sounds too good to miss!
I'll go, fancy the Art deco Hotel or the camping.
Either way count me in.
Are we going as a group under CKGB?
What if we take two vehicles?

I would think the hotel will book up quickly. I will probably camp and have a huge berghaus inflatatable tent that has 3 seperate bedrooms. Two vehicles should be fine.

It does. In my opinion it is over-rated. It is not in the nice airfield building, but across the drive in the modern building. Chances are it is already booked up.

I love a lot of the design detailing on the deco building - real inter-war aerodrome stuff.

I learned to fly there

Good idea. Be a chance for you to show us slightly younger blokes how it should be done.
Consider the gauntlet cast

There is no such thing as how it "should be done", for me that's the joy of these silly things, there is no "right answer", just variations, and for me that's a great thing.
Each of the ones I have part done so far explore different ideas and methods within a very meagre budget. Original Stevenson for the ERA except using 60 x 30 x 0.7 mm rails, pure plywood for the Austin, separate chassis for the Bentley, stressed skin alloy with a space frame for the Voisin and all of those were runners. Then there was the GN Kim, wooden chassis rails, plywood monocoque with thin alloy sheet jut like the old MG Midge.  I think that qualifies me to say I don't slavishly follow a " method". Did they work, yes all did, which was better or worse? The Bentley was at the bottom of the list with a separate chassis and body on top. They have all been fun, and all a thinking exercise with new skills to discover. Next is reverting to what Mike Stevenson suggested in the first pace. Will it be completed? NHS will have a big say in that.
Bodily medical stuff may throw some hiccups in the way, a cancelled operation due two covid hasn't been a great friend, and another waiting list .

Does that mean you haven't finished one?

Is it time to take the challenge and finish one incorporating the best of what you have discovered?

No, it means i have finished 5. If you look back you will see video of the ERA running in NZ, photos of the Voisin at Tieton where it ran all events over the weekend, and the GN was at the first ever meeting in GB at Stretton when Graham Hill, Geoff May and I were the only attendees with cyclekarts. I'm unsure, perhaps Chris Brown was there too.

What I mean is, just bring the one that you currently have on the go. I shall be bringing mine, even if only to get people's advice on how to progress it, though I hope it will be driveable by then.

I am sure whatever you have will be able to drive, even if it isn't finished.  I have seen video of unfinished karts on the track. It encourages people to be able to see projects in progress and I think that, given your experience and advice to others, people would like to see what you have done on your own, particularly as it will likely be the distillation of all the best of what you have learned.

Adrian, My vast canvas gin palace can accommodate 1 Rodger the lodger and you're more than welcome stay as long as you don't use any of your coffee shop techniques on me during the night. :)

I am aiming my hat at this ring with my build. It might be a close run thing with work getting in the way and the rest of life so, for me it is a tentative yes, and  I will camp, alone, with tent well secured against drunken revelers, bandits and ne'er do wells. I have yet to solve the problem of transport so if an Asda van rocks up with a bloke gaffer taped up in the back - it wasn't me, right!

Do we have to fill something in to attend the Sywell event?

I see it as my kart's debut. It will be there, roadworthy or not. That is my deadline target.

Jim, it wa going to be with a CK, Napier or Peugeot as well as birthday cake! Latest developments may have thrown all that out the window. State pension doesn't stretch far!

I have to give the list of names to the organisers this week. I guess the above list is still correct other than Rhys and his cake as nobody else has added or taken away. Please let me know by tomorrow morning if you want to be added or removed. This is going to be an extraordinary event for the club showcasing our cars on and off track to thousands of spectators.
Anyone who wants to be part of the weekend show really should join the club if they haven't already.

Hi Jim, form sent direct.to organisers and have received confirmation of receipt.  Club Membership form and cheque went in the post yesterday.
Will be camping all weekend arriving Friday afternoon, so available to help with any setting up for the club stand.
Will those of us camping be pitched next to each other?
Looking forward to meeting everyone and the CK contraptions 🤗😁

I hope to camp. I hope I am not too late booking, but wanted to ask something first.

Ian, you will know this, I expect. Your camping pitch is enough for a car and caravan (or car and tent), but presumably you are bringing your kart on a trailer; where will trailers go?

Morning all, I have just been trawling the Sywell website trying to find mention of food availability at the venue, and, not a mention of consumables anywhere. As Mrs JimR1999 will not go anywhere without foreknowledge of the eating arrangements, can anyone with experience of this event give me an idea of availability of grub in the area around the campsite and at the event?

I haven't been before but there should be the usual burger vans ect during the day. The Aviator Hotel on site does food and because there is evening entertainment I would think something will be open at night. I will bring some beer and a packet of crisps to keep me fed at the camp site.

Same as Jim
Bringing beer for camping - plus usual gas cooking arrangements. And assume burgers, curries etc at the show.

I am hoping to get to Sywell just before lunchtime to find the pitch and get my wrist band ect. The only big task will be to put up the canvas garage tent. We will have a banner, some vintage accessories and the directors chairs.
Best to bring a cover for your kart.
If anyone has some suitable vintage automotive trinketry they think would be good on the stand then please bring it along.

Hi Jim
Mine won't be very movable as it is not finished. I am bringing it without axles fitted and will fit them there (it won't go through the gate with them fitted!). And my front suspension isn't on, so the nose will have to be on a block of wood. Please just tell me where you want it plonked and hopefully it can just stay in that one place all weekend.

I would like to say a massive thankyou to all those that came along. It was a wonderful weekend and lovely to meet some new people with their beautifully made and nearly made karts. You guys put on a great demo up the track and answered the many many questions from the public at the stand. The apres show was also filled with a lot of banter and good humour keeping our spirits high during the chilly evenings at the site.

I'll maybe have to start planning for next year to come across and speak to everyone. Here's hoping.
