For sale and wanted / Thunderbug Kart for sale.
« on: 04 Apr 21, 02:57 pm »
Hi Guys.   Must confess I haven’t been following the action too closely, but I don’t think there’s been too much?
Julie is telling me to part with the kart. I was intending to make one more visit, just to see if all changes were ok, but the virus has really cramped our style big time.
The kart has been laid up now for over a year, on its trailer, on the drive. I have bought a poly tunnel, so it’s been well protected.
I think £750 would be a good price. I know it’s had a somewhat chequered career (!) but I believe it’s now sorted-an additional cable operated hand brake. The bodywork has been altered to provide a degree of protection to shoulders as well.
I can bring it to the next meeting if anyone’s interested. Dave.

I’ve just bought a part built trike....well, I need something to play with!  930 cc Suzuki powered.
The jury is still out on future cyclekart activity!
I hope you’re not going to throw me off the forum!?

Build journals / Thunderbug update
« on: 08 May 20, 10:49 am »
Just an update on my “improvements “. Extra cable operated calliper added with handbrake lever.
I’ve replaced the bulkhead behind the seat. This is now 20mm higher than my shoulders, giving some shoulder protection in the event of a roll. So currently building a lath/glass fibre boot lid, leaving a hole for the fake tank!

Tech Forum / Welding to chassis

I’ve got to weld some brackets whilst they are bolted to the chassis. Are there any issues with the karts electrical system? Ie safe to weld?

Off Topic / Thunderbug update

Hi guys....I’m still alive! Damage to shoulder etc is slowly improving and have spent the last week getting some repairs carried out to the kart. I’ve revised the brake pedal assembly, strengthened the calliper mounting and everything seems ok!!
I’m going to add an extra cable operated calliper to the same disc. Operated by a handbrake lever on the floor, will give a backup braking system and also a handbrake function!
I probably will not drive it again but need to create a safe Vehicle for another driver.

Off Topic / Patient update!
« on: 10 Nov 19, 06:56 pm »
Hi guys.....they let me out on Friday morning and Julie drove me and the kart home by 2.30pm. I’ve got to check in at the local hospital but hopefully it’s just rest and self repair!
This is the first time I’ve looked at my iPad and pleased to see Stefan has again raised the brakes issue!!  Don’t know yet if me and Cyclekarts will continue....I just hope I haven’t spoiled things for us all at Stretton...I can believe I wasn’t very popular!  Huge thanks to you all that helped us on the day.
Three times now I’ve created mayhem and everyone keeps pointing out it could have been much worse etc etc where was the roll cage etc etc . If I continue, it will be re-bodied with a cage!!
Again sorry for messing your day up, I’m going to study brakes now!!!  Dave

Off Topic / Third party insurance etc.
« on: 23 Oct 19, 07:27 pm »
Rhys...you have extensive experience of attending organised kart meetings. I wonder what costs are involved.
Does the event need a third party insurance in place for protection of riders, spectators and property?
Does each driver have his/hers own personal insurance?
Does anyone in the club have personal insurance?

When at Stretton, I assume our £30 gets us insurance of some sort?

I’m thinking of the event I’m proposing. Are we going to get insured, or will drivers simply accept the risks involved, and take the consequences?!

Thoughts please!   Dave.

How did the story finish Rhys?

Tech Forum / Stub axle bearings
« on: 19 Oct 19, 04:28 pm »
I’ve been a bit concerned lately about whether the bearings I put on the front axles are capable of dealing with axial loads. A bit a web research tells me that deep groove ball bearings can take both types of load.
How do I know my bearings are deep groove? Are all simple ball bearings deep groove?

Off Topic / One or two wheel drive.....
« on: 16 Oct 19, 09:55 pm »
What does everybody use? Are you happy with what you have?
I’m two wheel drive but seriously considering single wheel drive with a friction type ‘drive’ to the free wheel, simply to improve cornering.

Tech Forum / Chain/drive cog protection
« on: 12 Oct 19, 09:40 pm »
I’m going to start tomorrow to put some protection on the chain cog. I have a length of
25 x 10 mm aluminium and am going to put 2 pieces side by side, attached to the seat base and the rear part of the chassis.
Onto this aluminium I’m putting a home made chain tensioner to keep the slack under control. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Tech Forum / Help...engine won’t turn over!
« on: 29 Sep 19, 09:48 am »
Hi guys...can’t get the engine to turn over, following my last incident at Stretton!
There was a lot of oil around at the time.
Several days after I found the engine wouldn’t turn over, but will without the plug in.
Now, several weeks later, no change, after one pull, engine will turn about one rev then lock solid.  Any thoughts?  Can’t bear the thought of having to take the whole thing apart.

Events / Potential new venue
« on: 29 Aug 19, 07:36 pm »
I’ve been looking around up here for another venue for cyclekarting, and have come across a kart track in Middlesborough.....http://www.teessidekarting.co.uk/.
I feel that another venue further north might encourage our Scottish friends to get involved, and locals of course.
It would mean substantial journeys for some people.
Perhaps, like Tieton, it could be treated as a one off, Grand Prix type event, where everyone would make an effort to attend?

I’ve spoken to the track manager, (Paul) who sees no problem in us playing there.
He says we could have a half hour session at the end of every ‘corporate hourly event’
Potentially that would mean 4 hours play per day. £35 per cart.
There are camping facilities in the paddock for about 10 units, electrical hook up and showers.
The track we would use is 1100 metres long, not the 2.1km one ! Longer than Stretton.
Have a think about it, and it can be discussed further at Stretton if needed.
