Off Topic / Does self isolating mean more building time .?
« on: 15 Mar 20, 05:25 pm »
There’s got to be a bit of a bright side to staying at home and isolating yourself from this Coronavirus so we need plan ahead folks. Get materials in as you won’t be able to rely on EBay if all the delivery drivers in the country are self isolating. Don’t run out of welding gas.

Events / National Micro Car Rally 2020
« on: 12 Sep 19, 07:19 pm »
Evening chaps. Last weekend was the National Micro Car Rally. Mostly bubblecars
( I’ve owned two Messerschmitts, a Heinkel and an Isetta. I’m just about to buy an unrestored 1960 Trojan)
Geoff went with his MG. this years rally was in Somerset. It moves to a different part of the country each year. Next years location is yet to be announced.
I contacted this years organiser he said
“ I saw Geoff's car and it's amazing, a real work of art. I only organised the show for this year, next year it will be somewhere else, but I am absolutely sure the organisers would be delighted to have you there! Keep an eye on the Fb page for the National MicroCar Rally as the next event will be announced there”
Whilst we wouldn’t be able to go on the road for the annual run we would be able to drive round the field and maybe put on a small display. We could camp and be part of a big group. It would also raise the profile our group to other small car enthusiasts

Looks like Chris Evans Carfest is back. If I find time I’ll call the organisers and see if there might be something for us to take our cars to

Tech Forum / Engine tickover
« on: 29 Apr 19, 04:15 pm »
I’m having problems with my tickover speed. The engine on idle is racing away and I can’t seem to slow it down which means keeping my foot on the brake if I’m in the car! I’ve got the throttle cable completely backed off
I’ve backed off the idle screw so it’s not pushing the piston up
Any thoughts ?

CK number register / Number 33
« on: 28 Apr 19, 11:15 pm »
I’ve chosen 33. As my late father was born in 1933 and he taught me everything about scooters, motorbikes and cars. He helped me with my first car restoration in 1976... it was a 1957 Messerschmitt bubblecar. He would have laughed but secretly would have been proud that his crazy son could build a red CycleKart

Tech Forum / Front beam
« on: 21 Apr 19, 08:31 pm »
There has been some backstage discussion regarding my front beam. After our run round the car park at our last meet it was suggested that my front beam might have been put on back to front. Today I finally had time to strip it off and check it out.
I am correct and it was put on the correct way round (with the grease nipples at the front)
The problem is the beam appears to have rolled when clamped up and this upsets the castor angle.
The problem is how do you stop the beam rolling and doing this other than welding the beam to the spring?

Tech Forum / Exhaust
« on: 01 Mar 19, 10:46 pm »
Ok so I’ve now got a running CycleKart. I’ve removed the governor, replaced the carb with a Mikuni ( I still need to do a bit of work to get that set up properly)
Next is the exhaust. What do most CycleKarters do ?
Do I just use the manifold, cut off the existing silencer and weld on some bends and have a noisy straight through exhaust or should I put some kind of silencer on there to quieten things down?
I just want to get the best I can out of this engine

Events / Builders meet 31st March....
« on: 27 Feb 19, 08:03 pm »
It would be great to have a builders meet one day at a weekend in March.
We need to find somewhere that’s kind of central to the country so we don’t put off anybody having to travel to far.
I’d be happy to have it here but I’m on the Welsh border and might be a bit far for a day. Im working on finding a field locally we can have some fun in but I need my Cyclekart to be totally finished before approaching local farmers, then we can make a weekend of it. There’s loads of cheap b&b round here, it’s walking and cycling country
I’m sugesting the third, forth and fifth weekends of March (16 17th, 23 24th, 30 31st)
I’ll bring my Cyclekart now I’ve got my ramps
We just need suggestions for a location

Well now the engine is running and I’ve sorted how the Torque converter fits and the throttle cable is now the right length..... I might put the wheels on and try driving it without the body outside the workshop !
What are you folks doing ?

Tech Forum / Mikuni carb question
« on: 16 Feb 19, 07:48 pm »
I think I have a problem with my Mikuni Carb
The piston valve ( or slider) has a slot in one side that you use to fit the throttle cable in. In my mind there should be a pin on the inside of the throttle body that goes into this slot to stop the valve from turning round.
My carb does not have a pin to do this so if you put it together and pull the valve up using the cable, it turns around in the cylinder.
Pics below show where a small hole is on the outside that goes through. I think this is where the pin should be. Last pic shows where I’ve put a 1mm drill bit through.
If it’s missing I’m sure I can find a pin and put it in to do the job but I’m keen to get advice to you folks as it might help others in the future

Tech Forum / Play
« on: 31 Jan 19, 01:24 pm »
I’m not used to Karts and don’t know how much play I should expect in the front end
1) kingpins.... there is movement and this transfers to movement in the front wheels
You’ve got the steering arm, 10 mm bolt. Two Nylon hat bushes in the front beam and a tube that’s 10 mm inside and outside to match the inside of the nylon bush
I just think the tolerances are poor
2) hub to remove steering wheel, I bought what looks the same as Graham has on his. Looked good when it came. Welded it on the column and bolted to the  wheel
The play left and right is crap. It’s like my old VW!
I know it’s only a CycleKart but the combined play will just make steering sloppy
