Off Topic / Get out and drive!!!!!
« on: 07 Apr 24, 01:43 pm »
So I thought I would start a thread not just for newbies but for people building as well.

For those that don’t know, my kart is No 27 Austin Special.

The best advice that was given to me and what I wish to pass on is to get your kart to a good stage then……

GET OUT AND DRIVE IT !!!!!

Seriously, you will learn more in 10 minutes than after 20 cups of tea and not only that it’s great fun and good for anyone with a hint of petrol in the blood!!

It has taken me a long time to get my kart to drive where I am happy, confident and just enjoying every bit when at events.

I am a big guy, my kart is not light but after tweaking tyres, spokes, hubs, gearing, air filters, exhausts, carbs, torque converters she was really ripping by the end of the Santa Pod session which was just what I needed to get the enthusiasm back after the winter months.

If you come along to events you will see, learn and overcome problems you didn’t know you had!!!! And we all have a great laugh and make new mates at the same time.

As a club, we need you guys to support the events (where possible) as much as you can, if you don’t have a kart, no worries we always have things we need help with and we really appreciate it.

If you at the the beginning of your CK journey and need some advice, there are loads of folks who happily point you in the right direction.

So you have no excuses, don’t polish just get out and drive!!

Hope to see you at a CKGB event soon

Cheers
Andy

Here goes...

After figuring out quite a lot about my Cyclekarts over the last couple of years, what works, what doesn't where to get things, what breaks and what could do with improving, I thought that the time has come to stop progressing old number 27 and get back to my other CK which was started some time ago. Now I have sorted some of the other projects I had on the go and got some vital Mo Jo back for this I thought I would start a build thread and hopefully it will be of interest.

I am not an engineer, a fabricator or anything, so some of the aspects of building is a total head scratcher and I have made lots of questionable choices with parts and ideas to date - some worked some didn't but hey thats all part of it right!! I purchased a welder and over the last 18 months been getting more confident that my welding holds up out on the tracks and in places looks ok  :D ;)

For those who know me, my day job is a Graphic designer and therefore visualising is probably one of my strongest abilities. I am not a replicator as my skills generally let me down, so I have always been a huge supporter of creating what you like and what you can, using what you have around you or what is available, help from others and if required buy in what you need. I also try (where it works) bringing in skills from my trade to create the look I want - Both of my karts to date have been wrapped using vehicle wrap and bespoke graphics in particular on No 27.

However, I have two cars in mind for this next build so let me know what you think of my choices of inspiration!!

I stumbled across a machine that is a real bit of me and therefore the first choice is an Alvis Silver Eagle Special. From what I know, These machines have been built as 'Specials' on the 4 seater platforms much like other Riley and Mg's that have been given a second life!! Replicated to 1930's grand prix specs and made legible to compete at various events - cool car

The second choice is a Riley kestrel 'Freddie Dixon' Special - Mainly due to the fact my Dad has a Kestrel and he would never let me do this to it  ;D ;D so I would plan to have a go at something like this

What I do know is that I would have to become some sort of 'Louvre Guru' in either option but I recently made and 3D a louvre form that worked ok on test material but it was only very small so that may be something I choose carefully how many I am prepared to attempt!!

Lastly, is a picture of the chassis on the welding table as I am considering heights and how I am going to do the front to work with the leaf springs. I am using a Gemini front axle and smaller 500mm springs to reduce the overall length of this CK for no other reason that so it fits in the back of my 1960 chevy van (another questionable choice).

Hopefully I will make some more progress over the coming weeks that is worth sharing.
Cheers

Hello Everyone

I am starting this thread to try and gauge the interest in the supply of basic components to get some of you going with building a CycleKart. We understand that for some of you (myself included) find starting from a blank piece of paper slow going. Also, the space and tools required can also be a problem.

There are lots of things to take into consideration and I am hoping that over the coming months we will make some good progress with the overall guidelines for builders now the official Club and committee has been formed. Some of these factors for discussion will include producing Cycklekarts that are closer to the the 'stevenson' concept and other categories.

For now though as I write this we are on our way to 300 users of the forum and I would like to find out the interest in the following:

1. The production and sale of a basic ladder style chassis
2. Hubs, Axles and wheels
3. Engines and upgrade kits
4. A full rolling Chassis

5. Workshop boot camp days (this is very much an idea at this stage)

The problem to date has been the numbers - if 10 people would commit to having a chassis produced then the possibilities of getting the unit costs down become much better.

Please note: We are trying to encourage people into this hobby and therefore if the above doesn't apply to you then no worries but all positive comments and suggestions welcome at this stage. Also if people know of reliable companies that could be added to a list for services that is also appreciated as we are spread all over the UK so it may help someone near you :)

Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Andy

For sale and wanted / last CycleKart for Sale
« on: 01 Jun 20, 06:43 pm »
**Just an update to this post** - December 2021

ALL FULL KARTS ARE NOW SOLD

thanks Andy

They have good quality, solid parts, comet TAVs, original Honda GX200 6.5HP engines (not run yet) and are generally well put together bits of kits that were sold for a lot more when the original company was trading. Chassis are powder coated. With a couple of hours tinkering you will be going round your garden!!! All ready for someone to build their inspirational car.

If someone wants to get a serious head start for a project, not able or have the room to build the chassis then they can be up and running in a matter of hours and so i hope these could be worthy of serious consideration to someone new to the scene or someone who wants to have another. I know that the time and money I have put into my own personal kart far exceeds this. I also think that if someone wants to take this and then remake the body to be more in-tune with their ideal car of the 30's or whatever, then again what a great place to start.

I have lots of pictures, here are some below of one of them, please message me for serious enquiries and further information.

Thanks for looking - viewing available in Northampton
Andy
