Where to get stuff / Re: Leaf Springs
« on: 26 Mar 22, 03:50 pm »
Synthpunk,

Take on board what you say about the weight rating but it was my intention to reduce it from 2 to 1 leaf.
As for the width, when you use the Jones Springs you need packers welding to the frame rails whereas these may only need a washer either side.
Anyway it’s an option for anyone on a budget after all you would be saving £80 + with a little extra work to fit.

Regards

Scotty

Gents,

I have been following the progress on/for sourcings sets of springs with interest, having bought a set from Jones Springs last year. However I have recently found a company who supply springs for trailers which look very interesting ( £14.26 EACH )
Now for someone who lives North of the Wall, THIS IS VERY INTERESTING!!!!!
I will attach a link below but what really draw my attention to these beauties is there dimensions being 50mm wide and perfect for the chassis steel of 75 X 50. I know they only have 1 eyelet fitting but this might be a bonus.
Anyway I thought I would put it out there and when I get a set I will let you know what they are like. One more point by the way, you can order up “U Bolts” & retaining plates to fit, no need to “mix and match”.
The springs are “Towflex” so may be sourced from other places in the U.K.

CKGB Club / Re: CKGB Club Inaugural Meeting 5th March 2022
« on: 06 Feb 22, 11:12 pm »
Stefan,

Please accept my apologies for the delay to this reply as I have been attempting to rearrange my pre-existing plans which clash with the date set for the inaugural meeting.

Unfortunately I have been unable to do so and as a result will be in able to attend the meeting.

Given the above, can you please accept this reply as a request to be considered for membership.

My I suggest an alternative supplier you could make contact with, this being Jones Springs. Rhys and myself bought 2 sets of springs which cost £115.00 per pair.
The sizes were as detailed below and if you need any further info about them the man to ask would be Rhys as he has a noise for finding suppliers.
Once again, I would suggest this parts issue has identified the possible need to create a club parts supplier list.
By this I mean that the membership can consult said list when looking for parts rather than openly posting requests for help. I think it would save a lot of time and help everyone.

Springs:-

Width.              35 mm

Thickness.          5 mm

Eye to eye.      590 mm. (Straight line)

Along length    660 mm

Arch.               100 mm

Comes with bronze bushings to take M10 bolts.

Graham,

Thank you very much for those words of encouragement and I did enjoy my trip to Englandshire.
As for being discouraged, far from it Graham. If you know or have learned anything about us Scott’s we are a bloody minded and dogged bunch, with one or two exception e.g. me, hence why we are a Nation of geniuses and engineers 😁😁.
No, no, you can thank me later for all the things we have given you English 🤔🤔 such as roads and tyres to start with.
I am a bit disappointed that there are very few enthusiasts up North of the wall, to date me and one other, however I really do believe that once “the word” gets out then “they will come”.
My build hit the buffers a bit due to the good weather and my wife’s insistence that our garden take priority, after all who in their right mind is going to argue with “she who must be obeyed”.
This said i have spent the down time to plan, purchase and accumulate most if not ALL the parts needed including several square metres of cedar strips which will be used to form the back end and reduce weight.
As a side issue I did find it extremely difficult to source some things, eventually obtaining them from our transatlantic cousins, which makes me think that there must be an easier way to do this. I know we have a “get stuff” forum but to me it appears to be reactive rather than proactive🤔🤔.
Anyway I am looking forward to a winter tucked up in my garage working on the build and listening to radio 4 safe in the knowledge that came the spring something resembling a cycle kart will emerge ready to take South and stand proudly shoulder to shoulder with you English.
Once again thank you for your kind remarks and I look forward to meeting up again next year, you never know by then there may be more of us up here 🤞🤞🤞

Regards for now,

Scotty ( a.k.a. Charlie S)

To pick up on Today’s posting by RhysN, I can echo said sentiment, so much so there appears to be no active members North of the wall, and if there are I have yet to receive a reply from the 6 or so listed within the “members list”, who I extended an invitation to a builders meeting. This invitation was also extended to listed members in Newcastle but alas the 2 gents in question have “put aside their cycle kart toys” for other challenges.
Well this small setback will not stop me in my quest to build my vehicle and it means I will have to start spreading the word in person. So if anyone out there knows of anyone, “UP NORTH” interested or involved with cycle karts please let me know, it’s lonely up here 🥺🥺.

First off I would admit to asking Stefan if he would initiate this post following the great idea of a “build meeting” scheduled for the South West.
Now I personally am located in Aberdeen and would be willing to travel some way South, (preferably this side of the “WALL”, no disrespect to our English neighbours) so as to meet up with likeminded members in order to share ideas and talk through various aspects of our builds. In addition such a meeting, or meetings could go a long way to promote and encourage other to join in thus expanding our fellowship.
Sorry about the “fellowship bit” I got caught up in the moment as we had been watching a re-run of “Lord of the Ring” on TV last night but you know what I mean🤪🤪.
Anyway if there are any likeminded eccentrics or misunderstood geniuses out there willing and able to travel a few miles to meet up then get your names down and I am sure we can find a suitable venue to meet up.

Regards to all,

Scotty ( a.k.a. Charlie S)

Build journals / Panhard & Levessor 35CV Monoplace (1926)
« on: 14 Jun 21, 03:45 pm »
PREAMBLE

Let me start this “Build Journal” by putting my cards firmly on the table.

I am a BUREAUCRAT; there I’ve said it, and it feels good.

Why did I reveal all? Well, it’s like a recovering alcoholic, and the answer is quite simple. Not only am I Scottish (accident by birth and proud), no I am or I should say I was, by profession, a Civil Servant. That in itself is hard to admit but it gets worse, a lot worse.

I was a Tax Inspector.

Now I know a number of you have been revolted by these shocking revelations and will immediately hit the “delete button” calling, no demanding, that Stefan cast me out from this august fellowship but fellow builders can I not appeal to your compassionate natures and can you not find it in your heart of hearts to welcome and embrace into your fold, a misfit such as I, giving this sinner a second chance.

I am a reformed person, seeking advice and encouragement, willing to change my ways, well up to a point.
What I am trying to say, from the very outset is that within these hallowed builders circle I am, what one would technically refer to as, “an idiot”. This I know, accept and more importantly can live with.

The mention of things like “dipstick threads TPI’s & UNC’s” not to mention the conversation thread I noted about someone’s “BIG END” made me glaze over and filled me with feelings of inadequacy, sending me scurrying to the safety of a darkened room from where I hope to eventually reappear a little the less for wear, but still emotionally scarred for life.

What I am trying to say within this preamble is that I have ZERO engineering knowledge or ability AND because of this, within this journal, there will be a complete absence or reference to any technical phrases or terminology, just plain and simple text, “I hope”.

The build will be undertaken on the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) principal and I will be internalizing this every step of the way. Not only that, I am a firm believer in, “not trying to reinvent the wheel”. If someone before you has spent time and effort developing a way to construct “a kart” over a period of years then perhaps one should spend time listening to what they have to say, AND take on board their advice and guidance.

Throughout this journey from “Bolts Bits and Blunders”, I hope to emerge at the other side the proud owner of a complete, working and fully functioning cyclekart.

Well let me dream.

Invariably there will be mistakes AND problems along this winding road to completion but like every good Civil Servant knows they will all be attributed to someone other than myself.

Happy Building and stay safe.

SCOTTY

Where to get stuff / Re: Front axles
« on: 11 Jun 21, 11:20 am »
Must be a day for getting “STUFF”.

Just had a call from Gemini Karts and they now have the steel tubing in to start up making front axles again.

SO if anyone is looking to buy an axle from them, get in now.

As for me, I’m away to lie down in a darkened room for a time as this is toooooo much excitement for me, not to mention all that money which has flowed out of my bank account. It’s like watching your life blood drain away in front of ones own eyes.

I don’t know if I will get over this for weeks🤪🤪

Regards and stay safe,

Scotty

GOOD NEW!!!!! , well for me at least.
I have found a UK business who supply type 35 chain and sprockets, this being Dartford Karting.
More to the point, being a Scotsman, the 76 tooth sprocket cost a whole £6:00.
Result.
If anyone out there has not found this supplier as yet I would suggest you visit their website.

Scotty

Does anyone know of a business, or private individual, in the UK who can supply a 78 tooth sprocket which is compatible with, and will fit a carrier with a 5.25” Bolt Hole Circle all of which is to be married to/with a 25mm shaft.
Alternative sprocket(S) will be considered but they must fit a carrier with a 5.25” B.H.C.

Where to get stuff / Re: Newbie wheels
« on: 01 Jun 21, 03:29 pm »
PeterL,

Being a, “Newbie” myself I also deliberated which rims to go with and eventually settled on the rims you have provided the links to.

Others within the group kept me right on rims, especially on the front, which are those that have, or take, 6003 bearings (35 mm O/D), as they fit the 17 mm axles. In saying all this I did have problems getting tyres to fit the 1.2 X 17” rims.

I know this posting sounds a bit negative but the main point behind it all is to remember “rims that look a great deal may not be the case if you can’t get the tyres to fit”.

As for the 1.4 X 17” rims (rear seat) I had hubs made to fit and I am extremely satisfied with the results as the rims came with pre-drilled holes which were used to accept and locate the new hubs.

One last point, an idea was floated by Chris that a supplier list should/might be created which would help all members to locate parts and services at the best prices plus avoid those which may not come up to acceptable levels of service.

Just a thought 🤔🤔🤔

Regards

Scotty
