Tech Forum / Re: Aluminium Forming
« on: 21 May 22, 08:25 pm »
When it comes to shaping Aluminium i fount that it is not that tricky, i watched a bunch of youtube videos, then brought a few sheets of ally from my local scrap metal yard , im a big fan of making my own tools too, so a log with a dish cut into it i built a small english wheel out of scrap metal from the scrap metal yard , buy a few old hammers , wooden domed malets, i was able to form some good shapes, i subsequently brought a shrinker stretcher and built a louver cutter , if you dont have a tig welder then riveting panels is the way to go, but use solid rivets rather than pop rivets, i made a rivet squasher out of a pair of bolt cropers.
When shaping metal dont over work it, between anealing cycles, and take your time, with aluminium if you bend it out of shape it is easy to shrink it back to the shape you want, and if your metal work is less than perfect then a little filler and a paint job will hide any imperfections, i find it is much better to shape a flat sheet into the shape you want rather than trying to find a preformed bit of metal ie a lampshade and trying to get it to fit your bodywork without it looking like a cut up lampshade riveted to your kart !!!.
But thats just my experance in shaping metal to build the body on my Austin seven, i would say get some scrap metal and have a go at shaping it, but have a watch of some youtube videos..

Well the use of a gy6 engine dose not really affect the ethos of a cyclekart, and seeing as it is acceptable to lightly tune the honda engine upto 10 hp which would make it faster than a gy6 engine, , its a perfect setup if your building a three wheeler. For me the ethos and spirit of cyclekarts is keeping the dimensions similar and the asthetics right.

Ok so i gave my steering a good looking at yesterday and realized i had made a rookie mistake and fitted the gemini axle on the wrong way round !!, so swapped it round and it was a lot better but , i think i need to get it on some smoth ground to tweak it properly.

Yes my back is not great too so my seat really helps take out the worst of the bumps .

Tech Forum / Alternative engine to the honda gx200 !!!!
« on: 08 May 22, 07:44 pm »
Hi all so i have built my cyclekart and instaled a gy6 125cc engine which is fitted to most cheap chineese mopeds, purely because i had the engine !, it had its complications instaling it, but it works, i managed a top speed of 36 mph on dirt tracks, and its quite quick of the mark it wont spin the wheels but not far off from doing so . I have not driven a kart with a gx200 engine but i think the gy6 engine is an equal match !!!?.
The only issue i have is that running over rough ground the engine starts to splutter and smoke a bit due i think to the float shaking about causing the engine to run very rich , dose the honda engine have a float bowl and have the same problem ??.

Tech Forum / comfy seat,
« on: 08 May 22, 10:12 am »
After the first run of my Kart on a very rough woodland track im glad i made up a comfy sprung seat , i guess most people use foam in there seats, but after driving my kart and finding out how you can feel every bump.
So i came across an old sofa and found it was a sprung sofa, so not beeing one to turn things away i took the sofa broke it down and used the wood to make up a seat base then took the springs and cut them to size and mounted to the frame, Then took some of the foam and fabric to cover the springs , Its so much better than a lump of foam, i just need to find some old leather to cover the seat..
