Tech Forum / Re: Steering geometry
« on: 10 Jul 19, 04:44 pm »
My steering wheel radius is 150mm
Pitman 65mm
Steering arm 110mm

I will mention tyre pressures, low pressure on the front increases steering weight from light (with current pressures) to Oh wow, heave!
Pressures are front 20 psi, and rears 28 psi.

The only way I can think of reducing the grip, is to reduce the surface area, maybe
by cutting the individual blocks to be smaller, or maybe a grove down the centre might be easier.
Think Jackie Stewart cutting his tyres at the Belgium GP, although that was to increase water
dispersion IIRC.
Of course cutting them will also spoil the look!

I think the carton of enthusiasm will be found at Streeton tomorrow.
We have all hit that, 'I don't know how to do', 'I can't see a way to do it', 'hell not certain I want to do this anymore'
moments, usually while nursing a sore thumb, or dripping blood! Or my personal fav,
the part you have just spent hours and hours fettling, that thing you just made falls to pieces or you just trim one final bit off...too many.

Re the engine cover, could you go with creating the silhouette of the shape from the side view, but leaves the engine plenty of ventilation?
Just a thought.

Tech Forum / Re: Chain Length V's Drive shaft.
« on: 05 Jul 19, 05:06 pm »
I'm not looking at moving the engine the other end for any sort of performance gains.
For me at least, it is not 'thought to be a good thing'. Exactly the opposite.

It is aesthetics and proportions, trying to fit a GX200 and Tav into the tiny tails of the car
that inspires just isn't going to work. Not without cutting dirty great holes into it and spoiling the lines.
However there would be a engine sized hole in front of my feet. Would seem a pity not
to build, just because I can't have the 'horse pulling the cart' to misquote old man Ferrari.
Building the Masser has showed long nose, and foot room with engine in the boot gets interesting.
My feet, pedals and steering arms all arrive together, this would be avoided, and more comfatable ;-)

I don't see it 'drifting away' as you put it, of the 8 cars at Streeton the other month,
arguably the 'Hornet' has such things as front breaks, to enable it to get through IVA
but performance wise is the same, and the '3 wheeled Morgan' has a none standard engine
for ease of construction. Of the 6 others plus your Kim, which I can't fit in, leg length not fatness I might add :-) are all Stephenson, are they not???

Tech Forum / Chain Length V's Drive shaft.
« on: 05 Jul 19, 11:54 am »
Is there any recommend maximum length regarding chains.
Thinking about next CK, front engine, rear wheel drive, just like the inspiration
car, do I take a chain front to back, results in 5 foot or so between the sprockets,
or run a drive shaft along the side of the car.
Of the two I'm preferring the later however a chain might be easier 'if' the distance
doesn't cause problems.
Any thoughts, observations etc.???

Agree about the kill switch, although I havn't sorted one for myself yet. Just the engine switch itself.
Should we all decide a standard placement for all, so in emergency no one is hunting for them?
Or would say a yellow circle around the kill switch to make it obvious be better?
Just thinking out loud.

Mine is currently one, but is able to be changed to two.
I will be experimenting at Stretton.

I plan to run with it installed at Stretton.
Then when I make alterations to the engine I can see and feel the difference it makes.

I know you can get exhaust wrap to keep the heat in the exhaust.
Can you get something similar for fuel pipes to keep the heat out them?
I was wondering about the silver foil bubble wrap type of thing, or would itself melt?
Would also wrapping the fuel tank with the same silver foil assist in keeping heat out, I know
Rhys has talked about a damp tea towel or tea shirt to reduce the temp in the fuel tank, just a bit
concerned on longer running/hotter days the material becomes potentially flammable when it dries out.

Tech Forum / Re: Polyester Resin
« on: 16 Jun 19, 10:12 pm »
Re gluing the tub, better if you can screw/clamp also well as glue, and my monologue used
Evo Stick water proof wood glue...available various sizes, in a blue container.
The green Evo Stick wood glue is not water proof, and the price difference is not great enough
to bother with the green imho.

RhysN...kindly re read what I put and tell me which bit is incorrect? At what point did I say Epoxy was harmless? For your information
one wiff of polyester I stop breathing, when I received my kit car body I had to wait a
couple of weeks with it in the open air, before I could go near it without a reaction.

This is the tech forum for information, both polyester and epoxy can be made to go off at different rates from a matter of minutes
to several hours, actually days but that was an experiment far outside the manufacturers data.

I will just add to all the above information. If you have any breathing problems or difficulties (asthma, COPD etc.), use Epoxy resin rather than Polyester, far less fumes.
It's also a bit stronger, and doesn't attack polystyrene :-) It is however also dearer :-(
