« on: 20 Mar 24, 06:05 pm »
It is not long now till the 2024 season commences.  The majority of the events will requires a NORA licence to take part.

The first event (Santa Pod) has been cancelled, but we are is discussions with Santa Pod and are likely to have the cancelled event re-scheduled to another date, which could only be a few weeks away.  Consequently, please can I urge you to obtain your 2024 NORA licence as soon as possible.

A year's basic CycleKart national adult license is £25 plus £3 admin fee and is available here: https://nora92.com/product/annual-licence-2024/

Events / IMPORTANT - HELMET REGULATIONS
« on: 07 Mar 24, 10:59 am »
Hi all, when we are taking part in events held under a NORA permit, then we have to comply with an amended version of the CKGB Handbook.  It is essentially the same, but has some additional detail.  For instance the NORA version quotes the standards that the helmets must conform to.  I just want to check that everyone has a helmet conforming to one of these standards (it should be labelled somewhere on the helmet).  The standards and wording in the NRA document is as follows:

14.Helmets
Helmets bearing any one of the under mentioned “standard” marks could be approved by NORA if deemed to
conform with certain additional criteria considered necessary for helmets used in motorsport.
British Standards Institution BS 6658-A
British Standards Institution BS 6658-B
UN ECE Regulation 22 ECE 22-06
Snell Memorial Foundation Snell M2015 (M2010 accepted if stamp within a three year period)
For 4x4 speed events (excluding SXS, UTV)
Snell SA2015, SAH2010 or SA2020
FIA 8860-2010 or 8859-2015

Please can I ask you to respond whether with a post saying whether your helmet complies or not?  If it does not comply, please confirm it is a proprietary helmet for motorcycling or motor-sport, plus whatever standard it is complying to?  f require, we can then seek to amend the NORA regulation.

UPDATE 11/3/24:  NORA have just approved our regs for events running under a NORA permit and have accepted our proposed amendment to their helmet regulations.  Our regs now relate to the current requirement for helmets used by motorcycles on the public highway, which in one way or another includes the helmets the majority of us are using.

Build journals / GNASHER - my next cyclekart
« on: 08 Feb 24, 04:11 pm »
I thought it was about time I wrote something about my new cyclekart.  I started building this just before Christmas, and now after just over a month he is nearing completion.

I built "Jane", my first cyclekart in 2022.  This was built in 3 months, but there were delays waiting for parts from China and the USA.  So the first lesson I learnt was to get your parts before you start building!  Consequently, I had been collecting parts for over 6 months.

Another lesson from the first cyclekart was to source a lot of the parts from a used go-kart.  I managed to locate an old pro-drive kart minus its engines at a very good price.  The owner was a bit perturbed when I asked if he had a power socket I could plug my extension lead into, and then proceeded to cut the kart in half with my angle grinder so it could be loaded into my small hatchback ;D

Anyhow, I will start off the story with the reasonings behind GNasher and the inspiration car (see attachment).

Events / 9 MARCH - AGM & PRE-SEASON SHAKEDOWN
« on: 06 Feb 24, 04:03 pm »
This first post of this topic will be updated as and when information is received or becomes available.  If you are interested in entering, please add a post with the % probability of entering and I will add your name to the list of entrants below.  This information will help the committee plan the required resources.

DATE:  9th March

VENUE:
AGM at "Gasoline Juice" followed by a pre-season shakedown cyclekart session at Whilton Mill Karting.

DESCRIPTION:
An AGM attendance invite has been emailed to the membership, please complete the Google-Form
if your attending so we can let the venue know numbers.
An email regarding the pre-season shakedown was sent to the membership on 6th Feb.

CKGB LEAD:
AGM - Stefan and Andy Boulton
Pre-season shakedown - Ian Fletcher

EVENT REGULATIONS:
the pre-season shakedown is not an official CKGB event, so a NORA licence or event regulations are not required, it will be run under Whilton Mill jurisdiction.  Simply register for the event using the link within the email.

COSTS:
As per the email, please follow the instructions in the email to make payment.

OTHER COMMENTS:
We will be on the "Mill Circuit", which is to the left of the entrance road.  Can those without cyclekarts park on the large car park to the right of the entrance road.
As of 09:00 6/3/24, we have 12 cyclekarts registered and 10 paid.  The Whilton marshal may put a maximum limit of 8 cyclekarts at a time on the track, which shouldn't significantly impact our time on track.
Our session will be from 14:30 to 16:30, with the previous session ending at 13:45.
A mandatory safety briefing by the marshal will take place between 14:00 and 14:30, somewhere near the pit-lane, so please listen out for this.
There will be several new cyclekarts, and these should be unloaded, warmed up, drivers with helmets, and ready to go on the track as soon as our session starts.  They should complete just a few laps then come in for a thorough check for leaks and loose fittings.  The other cyclekarts can then take to the track and the new ones can join them once their checks are complete.  The last thing we want is to lose time due to oil leaks on the track, or other incidents which may delay proceedings.
If we are limited to a maximum of cyclekarts on track, then a few (the number will be given during the safety brief) will be in the pits.  So if your circulating round the track, keep an eye out for someone at the end of the pit lane waiting to go out.  If you have been circulating a reasonable amount of time pull into the pits on the next lap and let someone else have some fun.

DATE:
Arrival from 10:00 AM Friday 31 May.  Show takes place 1/2 June.

VENUE:
Kit Car show at the "Three Counties Showground" near Malvern.

DESCRIPTION:
https://nationalkitcarshow.co.uk/
Large Kit Car show with various trade stands.  CKGB will have a static display in a marquee, plus its own grass display area for a variety of dynamic activities.

CKGB LEAD:
Ian Fletcher

EVENT REGULATIONS:
To be issued.  The CKGB activities will run under a NORA permit.

COSTS:
To be confirmed, but excellent value for money.
There will be two aspects to the cost, one is the cost of entry to the show (payable to the show) and the other is for the NORA permit and driver fee (payable to CKGB).
Regards the show fees, admission per day for drivers with a cyclekart is free, but passengers are £15 (£10 for an advance ticket).  Show fee for those camping the weekend (including show entry on both days) is £15 (£10 in advance) for cyclekart drivers and £30 (£20 in advance) for passengers.  See show website address above for pre-booking tickets.
CKGB fee depends on numbers attending, but expected to be in the region of £10 per driver.

OTHER COMMENTS:
Camping available on site.  Three counties showground has a dedicated campsite with facilities within the showground.  If you go on Google Maps it is shown.

There will now be a marquee in addition the main exhibition hall for the show.  The marquee is being managed by Complete Kit Car magazine, and will feature a history of kit car building with lots of classic kit cars.  The magazine sees Cyclekarts as a future trend in kit car building, so there will also be a CKGB static display in the marquee as well.  Therefore, this event now becomes more interesting for those of you who have part-built cyclekarts, and the public would love to see your efforts.  We will also be displaying the completed cyclekarts a few at a time throughout the weekend.
Our dynamic display area has now been approved by the organiser and the showground (see attachment).  It will be an oval track and there will be a mix of demonstration runs (up to 6 cyclekarts on the track) and racing (2 cyclekarts on track).  The racing will use a similar format to bicycle "pursuit racing" where each cyclekart starts at opposite start/finish lines.  The winner is whoever manages to catch up with the other cyclekart, or whoever reaches their finish line first on the last lap (approx 5 to 10 laps).  Full details will be issued in the event regulations.

“Knobbly” motor-cross type tyres will cut up the surface of the CKGB track, consequently only “road-pattern” tyres are allowed on the grass track.  Knobblies are acceptable for the static displays.

Tech Forum / EXHAUSTS
« on: 04 May 22, 04:50 pm »
I picked up an exhaust pipe for a GX1160/GX200 off Marketplace over the weekend, which I will be fitting to my CK.
I have ordered a Stage 1 engine from GX tuning, but this comes with a de-baffled OEM exhaust, however I want a system that will pass the exhaust out through the body-side.
I will need a silencer to go on the end of the pipe, but was concerned with allowable noise levels, and wondered what noise restrictions various venue have?

I came across the following figures for GX200's on the internet:

EXHAUST TYPE   db@idle    db@ 4,000 rpm
OEM                       85             98
debaffled OEM         87            100
Pipe & silencer        92.5         104.5
Open pipe              100.5       111

I was looking to fit a RLV high flow muffler or RLV high flow muffler with additional baffles as sold by GX Tuning, but would like to hear (no pun intended) what others have found successful?  I would also consider making my own absorbtion type silencer as the pipe and silencer at 104.5 seems quite loud to me.

I have seen some photos of CKs with dummy exhausts and they appear to have been made from 40mm plastic waste pipe parts!  Is this correct and does anyone on here have any experience of doing this?

Build journals / ANOTHER AUSTIN 7 TWIN CAM
« on: 19 Apr 22, 06:27 pm »
Hi all,

I thought it was about time I properly introduced myself and started my build blog.

My name is Ian, but most people from the RAF or motor racing know me as Billy (long story).  I'm in my mid 60s and was in the RAF as an aircraft technician for 35 years, then a project manager and engineer restoring warbirds (Hurricane and 2 Spitfires, and now work as a logistics and maintenance engineer.

In my spare time I like anything vehicle orientated and have built a couple of kit cars and designed and built my own racing cars.  I was the Competition Secretary for the RAF Motor Sports Association for many years and managed a Sprint track, a Speed championship and a Racing championship.  I think you guys have a fantastic thing going on here and I would gladly assist wherever possible (I have various safety cases, regulations, forms etc that can be easily adapted to your use and would be willing to share these with you).

Anyhow enough blabbing on about myself, so I have attached a PDF of where I am with my Cyclekart.

Also many thanks for all the info people have posted on the forum and the many informed answers I have received to my queries  8) ;D
