I made one for cutting ? 8 x 4 sheets of polystyrene wall insulation. Power supply was a 12v car battery. I don't know what the wire gauge was but it was nickel chromium. If you want details of the design let me know. Nothing difficult about it.

I've read about people using battery chargers or old computer PSU's to run their DIY electrolysis, for rust removal, so maybe something like that can be used for hot wire cutting, if the current isnt too high. or maybe an old Scalextric power supply.

Thanks guys, found a broadband router transformer that should do the job, 12V 2.5A if I keep the wire length to about 22 inches.
