Alternative engine to the honda gx200 !!!!
« on: 08 May 22, 07:44 pm »
Hi all so i have built my cyclekart and instaled a gy6 125cc engine which is fitted to most cheap chineese mopeds, purely because i had the engine !, it had its complications instaling it, but it works, i managed a top speed of 36 mph on dirt tracks, and its quite quick of the mark it wont spin the wheels but not far off from doing so . I have not driven a kart with a gx200 engine but i think the gy6 engine is an equal match !!!?.
The only issue i have is that running over rough ground the engine starts to splutter and smoke a bit due i think to the float shaking about causing the engine to run very rich , dose the honda engine have a float bowl and have the same problem ??.

The Honda engine has a float bowl, but it's a different type of carb, the GY6 carb has a diaphragm, and electric auto choke. I haven't had any problems with mine, I've driven it on uneven ground, but not at speed.

I am not sure about alternative engines being OK in a cycleKart?
I think you should check this out with Graham of Stephan. I think we have had a similar issue a while ago and there was a ruling made but I cannot recall the outcome.

It was mine, accepted on the grounds that at 125cc, under 10Hp, and auto transmission it fell within the engine specs. If I remember correctly Nic also raised the question of eligibility before using a GY6 engine.

When the group was first set up there was a section with what the guidelines etc and alternate engines were allowable to allow for Chris' Morgan, and also a dispensation on width to accept a couple of existing cars that were overwidth.
Both that and the "Ethos of a Cyclekart" seem to have gone from the website, or at least I can't find them any more.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!

Well the use of a gy6 engine dose not really affect the ethos of a cyclekart, and seeing as it is acceptable to lightly tune the honda engine upto 10 hp which would make it faster than a gy6 engine, , its a perfect setup if your building a three wheeler. For me the ethos and spirit of cyclekarts is keeping the dimensions similar and the asthetics right.
