Having read some of the answers fully, I am wondering if my interpretation of "live, driven" as suspended was a bit out 😊

I did wonder. But you gave me something to think about anyway. :)

I just meant that the wheels are keyed to the axle which is rotating.

With your kart, and if your design is to follow the original front suspension, I think that considering the torsion on the rest of the chassis is a thing to think about. My three wheeler has had me pondering torsional stiffness quite a bit.

yes, I am a bit worried about my chassis, but it isn't quite like the original. I am using Dave Dupaquier's sliding pillar suspension at the end of the axles (sprung stub axle) but with the axle attached at the narrow nose of the car

I suppose the tighter, more positive steering is the more desirable quality, so have one rear wheel free-wheeling?
I choose whether to lock one wheel or both according to the circuit and the conditions on the day.

how does t hat work? Wouldn't the un-keyed hub be running on the axle without a bearing?

That's Exactly how mine works.

I wonder about the hub heating. My hub is machined aluminium.

My freewheel set-up is described here: http://www.cyclekartsgb.com/build-journals/bugatti-type-37-build/msg4747/#msg4747 or type "freewheel" into the search box at the top of the page for other descriptions.

Great stuff. The hubs I got do not have a rebate to take an oilite bushing, though I will have oilites in my wheels, of ocurse.

Oilite bush where the bearings used to be works fine.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!

ah, clever. I have a friend with a lathe. Will see what can be done.

Does it matter which wheel? I suppose you could swap them round depending on direction of the circuit?

Rhys is right. If you want two wheel braking thought you need a diff. It doesn't matter which side of the diff is driven and both wheels will brake. Much better! The downside is when one is 'under pressure' and diving down through on the inside, your inside wheel may loose a little traction. Not that we ever do such things of course, eh Jim?

You are 100% correct Adrian. I have only ever driven my CK like Miss Daisy was in the passenger seat and have never lost traction. I did have a person to walk in front with a flag to keep the speed down and look period correct. I quickly got bored with that though and ran him over.
If you can drive round corners, you're not going fast enough.
