CK without a chassis?
« on: 30 Jan 19, 01:39 pm »
Hi guys...trawling through ck build pictures, I saw a body being built from very thin, 1/4 ply. Very well designed and braced, the builder was impressed with its torsional stiffness.
I was reminded of the Marcos sports cars of the 70’s. A structural ply box, with the suspension simply bolted on at each end.
Why not create two long side of the cart, whatever shape, with extensions front and rear to mount 1/4 elliptical and engine etc. Thinner ply extensions could be added to get the shapes required.
Additional thicknesses of ply at each end would give the mounting point for springs and dampers.
What do you all think?

A ply monocoque is exactly what I'm thinking for an A7 Nippy, though that's probably been relegated to number 3 build. I've realised that a car I'd dismissed previously is actually a feasible proposition so that's been slotted in as number 2.

There are a number of plywood cars. One in my shed, also go to www.gittrevillegp.com, check out "Cars" Bloody Mary, Derek's Bentley...

I’ve checked out Bloody Mary. I wouldn’t say that was a true monocoque, it is still using longitudinal chassis rails, albeit made of wood.
I’m still keen!  What glue would we use? Something exotic, or ordinary woodworking glue?
I’m going to knock up an Autocad drawing!

What is the overall dia. of a 17 inch wheel...about 22 ?

Interesting idea.  Did any pre-war race/competition cars have a monocoque construction?

Well Issigonis Lightweight special was plywood, essentially exactly as was suggested in the first post Every early GN was wood chassis (as is Kim, hanging from the ceiling here too) as well as many early cars.
I don't see anywhere in any of the guidelines that you should seek to replicate an original chassis :)
Slack Alice, I didn't note anywhere in your starter post that you mentioned monocogue. However, my Austin 7 build was, Derek's Bentley is, my/Wes' Darracq is..
Glue I use ALWAYS West epoxy, I've probably used hundreds of litres and am very happy with it, so why change. I did build a few small boats with resorcinol glue and had failures. I was once persuaded on another cyclekart forum to use Gorilla Glue, another total fail when subjected to the test process I use.
Wheel diameter around 22" depending on the choice of tyre.
Photo of Lightweight popped up today!
