Front Protection, Not Rear??
« on: 04 Feb 19, 09:26 am »
For open discussion. Has anybody previously introduced a bicycle suspension seat post into the steering column? It feels like it would take out some of the shock from a head-on meeting with the steering wheel in the event of a collision.

Interesting idea Graham, I was thinking of making up a sliding section with two pieces of telescoping square tube. The only thing I can think might be a problem with the seat tube is how strong the location is for rotary movement. A quick search found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/26-0mm-dia-350mm-length-alloy-suspension-seatpost-in-silver/182972927826?hash=item2a9a094f52:g:2wkAAOSw8lpZHocr:rk:41:pf:0.

I think I'll stick with the telescoping square tube, but add a coil spring inside, just to prevent an unneeded collapse.

Kim has telescoping sections of square tube which I got from B & Q. I had to make a spacer from a piece fo flat to make up the difference. Would it save anything? No idea, it was as much for adjustability as anything.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!

What's the maximum speed we're thinking of?   I ask because I wonder if it might be tricky getting the balance between the column being strong enough for normal operation on a bumpy track and yet weak enough to absorb an impact.

It might be that a shear pin joining two telescoped tubes but that is only stressed longitudinally along the steering column would create some sort of solution.

Should discussion of roll bars be separate topic(s) - the need and the design?

I've attached a drawing of my thoughts on a collapsible steering column, I claim no originality with this, others have already done the same thing. No dimensions included as it's up to the builder to decide on tube sizes and travel needed.
