Gemini rear hubs
« on: 07 Jan 22, 06:52 pm »
Hi, another cry for help. :)

I have a pair of Gemini hubs, which I believe in hindsight I could have had supplied without the studs. However that particular ship has sailed and I need to remove them to fit to the rear wheels, any ideas?

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I think Jim removed his, but I'm not sure if it involved hydraulics or not, I don't have any sort of press, so is the answer to cut them off and drill out the ends? or is there another trick that would save me a bit of work?

Thanks in anticipation

Peter

Yes Peter. I have done the same.    Find a stout tube or short piece of pipe that fits over the back of the stud flange, supporting the body of the Hub.  Mount the tube in your vice . Rest the Tube solid against the bottom/centre of your vice before tightening the jaws, so you aren't chasing the tube.
Tap sharply on the threaded end of the stud with copper hammer or similar . The studs aren't fitted in that tight and the studs will drop down into your tube . Can leave the nut on if you like  (protect the thread more)   Repeat three more times .

Hope this makes sense . Chris L

Thanks Chris, I did give one a tentative tap with a hammer, but worried about damaging the alloy casting, the tube makes sense,  as it gives support to the casting,

I will have a play tomorrow. I didn't want to go in all guns blazing and find I had missed the obvious, or worse still break a lug. With support around the head of the stud I could probably push them out in the vice jaws, now I know that they aren't in too tight.

Hiya peter, The studs I removed were screwed into the hub so I just locked two nuts together and unscrewed the stud. Chris has a good idea using some tube to support the hub while you attack it with the big Ommer. I do have a hydraulic press if you ever need to use it and I live just round the corner from Gemini if that could be of use to you.
If you can drive round corners, you're not going fast enough.

Happy New Year Jim. My Gemini studs definitey were splined , so pressed (with Ammer) was the way. The first clout got em moving quite easily.  ;D

Thanks Jim, I'm 99% certain mine are on splines too, but thanks for that information, I will give them a twist first with two nuts on to check.

Thanks for the kind offer, I'm a bit too far away to borrow a press, but I might try using the bench vice as a press rather than an anvil.

Mine were screwed in. I heated them with a hot air gun and unscrewed them with 2 nuts and a spanner, was nice and easy.

I brought the same hubs, rested it on my vice and a few swift blows with a hammer got them out..

Thanks, I'm obviously being too tentative, I heated and tried to unscrew with double nuts, but nothing budged. I will have a go with a hammer and tube tomorrow.

My Gemini hubs where splined and needed quite a wallop with a copper mallet to get them out as well.   I was a bit worried about damaging them but I think they are pretty strong.

You could place the tube at the back, clamp the whole thing in the vice and tighten it to press them out. A vice is a horizontal screw press after all..

That was my original plan Chris;  Then i found my vice didn't open that wide ....Oops.
Time to look for a larger model "RECORD" vice.

Ah, tube and big hammer then, Dad was engineering trained, he told me hit it gently

with a big hammer!

I've had a 4" Record vice for 40+ years, so tend to assume everyone has one.

I've got lots of vices. Gambling, women, smoking, drinking, drugs and a No.23 Record. Just saying.

All three sets of hubs I’ve had from Gemini where splined and have pushed out.  I asked Gemini to do the first set when I ordered them.  The ones I pushed out came out easily.

I’ve discovered all sorts of people locally who have kit they’re happy to let me use and vice versa.  It’s turned into quite the little coop!  Might be worth an ask on social media if the (h)/a/u/o/emmer and tube technique doesn’t work. Good luck.
