Rear wheel bolts
« on: 21 Feb 22, 01:23 pm »
In my dim and distant brain I seem to recall that stainless isn't the way to go with respect to bolts under load. Is this correct, or just my befuddled brain?

And if so should I be ordering M10 high tensile for the rear wheel/hub arrangement? (Gemini 4 bolt hubs through Honda wheels with clamping plates.)

Thanks

Peter

Stainless bolts are very little better than mild steel.
In my worthless opinion M8 of grade 8.8 or better are plenty good enough for any of the loads on a cyclekart. We use M8 12.2 for the seat mounting plates on all the seats we have tested to 70G in race car application, BTCC, GT program, Nascar etc. They give no problems.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!

Thanks Rhys I thought I had heard that they were more prone to snap, but wasn't sure, thanks for that.

The other thing that can happen with stainless is that the nut can friction weld to the bolt. It's happened to me when I worked in the yacht spar industry 40' up a mast. Lubricant is vital. (Yes I have had way too many jobs!)

Yes, I have been thinking about this on my main frame of aluminium.

I am aware that stainless can get galling that locks the bolts up. In some ways it seems an advantage, in that it will effectively be a self contained lock washer, but it could mean that it would be impossible to remove.  So despite liking shiny things I think I will be sticking with mild steel for my final assemblies.

Personally, I would go better than "mild steel" ie 8.8 or better. Mild steel has no reference.

I used 8.8 grade for my wheel bolts, no issues so far.
