Stretton are you clockwise or anti?
« on: 20 Dec 19, 12:13 pm »
Good morning, whilst at our last event at Stretton I spoke to a couple of people and am now interested in everyone else's opinion.

Which way round do people prefer to drive at Stretton, and why? The last time we were there we drove it anti clockwise

Personally I prefer clockwise, for me it flows better, the flick through the first corner with tyres squeeking, the drop down to the bottom hairpin and keeping as much momentum as possible through it, and then keeping the foot in until the tight 's' bends despite getting loose through the corners. Oh joy :-)

So what's others opinions? Has the Tribble got it wrong?

I've  not driven anti clockwise, however it would seem to me that if using the tight hairpin, near the pits, it is approached somewhat rapidly, and I suspect, from talking to karters too, that's where most incidents are likely to occur.
If that's the reality, my preference would be the clockwise, or take the sharp right hander out of the equation which is what Nick (owner) suggested to me.

My preference is anti-clockwise.

This is probably partially due to my love of nascar and Brooklands (both primarily anti-clockwise) so it feels more natural and seems right in my head. specifically at stretton though I love how you can pull away from the hairpin/S around that big swooping left hand turn. you can continue to power through most of the way down to the bottom hairpin and then you have that nice uphill through the chicane before the home straight. If we didn't use the hairpin and used the alternative track I feel that there is a risk that people will take that smaller chicane too fast which could in turn cause crashes but it would definitely be something to look at.

It is a great track both directions but my brain doesn't like driving against the starting number markers  ;) ;D

also some of my other favourite tracks like laguna seca or Daytona speedway are anticlockwise which adds to my theory that it is partly my head saying which way is correct

Glad you said Brooklands "primarily" as there were several layouts used!
Some of them were clockwise, and some only right hand corners!

I like the way clockwise flows too, dan't think I've driven anticlockwise though.

:o wow that would be hectic to race on. Imagine driving at 100mph and trying to take that left turn into the pits. when anticlockwise the pit entry would be much easier and exiting the pits would make more sense because your speed would be nowhere near as high. I like the chicane on the railway straight, adds some interest

;D thanks for the cool image Rhys

Thanks for all the thoughts re direction. Some interesting thoughts and observations there.

As for the Brooklands image Rhys posted, it shows just how huge it was, or put another way it makes me realise how much of it we have lost :-(

Follow the dotted line for the race direction, U turn on the straight near Member's Hill, then tight right onto the banking, Pits are on the right on  from near where the Hangar has recently been moved , then right , left at the fork.
100 mph, the 750s were  lapping at that in a 3 lap race from a standing start!
I've recently bought a few books on Brooklands, blows me away what these guys and girls were achieving.

After looking closer I can now see those details on the track. it looks great fun. the chicane on the railway straight would have been scary in the Railton as you try to keep your speed up!

The simulator at brooklands takes you anticlockwise and it flows so well and would have been inane to drive.

I’ve only ever driven it clockwise. Looking forward to going round the other way some time
