Chassis Steel
« on: 20 Apr 21, 06:52 pm »
Good evening fellow builders trust you are all well.

OK that the peasantries over with now down to business.
Has anyone been buying Chassis Steel of late and if so where are you getting it from?
I have just spent the best part of a day on the phone to major Steel Stockholders North of the wall and they have either said "no we don't do it" OR "no we can't get it". The can supply 75mm X 50mm X 3mm but as I am not contracting out to the British Army to build midget tanks, I am at a loss to find suitable steel for the Chassis Legs.
Any and all help on this would be appreciated and as I will be venturing down for the 26th of May event, I would combine this pleasure trip with a bit of pillaging for parts and materials etc.

Regards,

Scotty

I use FH Brundle for my steel supplies https://www.fhbrundle.co.uk/. The sort of box/rectangular section you want is called ERW, It usually has a thin wall of 1-2mm.
If you can drive round corners, you're not going fast enough.

Thank you gents for the info, you English appear to be keeping everything for yourself down there 😁😁.
Will have to do a bit of, “repatriation of assets” when I come down over “the wall” for the meeting in May but fear not, I have been practicing to speak the lingo so we should be good.🤞🤞

Thanks once again.

The place I got mine from is showing out of stock: https://www.themetalstore.co.uk/products/16swg-1-6mm-thick-mild-steel-rectangular-box-section.

It might be worth having a word with Rhys, as there's a stockist in Tamworth that he gets his steel from.

Thank you Chris, Rhys has intimated that he will make enquiries at said supplies for me.

The only thing or things I can take from this, which may be worth flagging up to others, is shortages or the breakdown in supply chains which impact on builds.

I know there are more important thing to life and wellbeing at the moment (such as Scottish rugby) 😁 but it may be worthwhile to suggest to others within the group, who have experienced difficulties in sourcing items, that they could post their experiences with details of the item or items in question AND the supplies who came up with the goods.

Just a suggestion 🤔🤔

By the way thanks Jim for the tip but like the supplier mentioned by Chris, they seem to be out of stock.

Regards

Scott

Clive H,

Thank you very much for the information, it would appear this size of box section is not that common and for whatever reason, like hens teeth to find.

I'm looking at -  Metal Mania - https://www.metalmaniauk.com/steel/rectangular-hollow-section/rectangular-hollow-section-steel-erw-75mm-x-25mm-x-15mm.aspx
It seems to be a rare commodity at the moment, most stockists have every size but...
I'm not quite as green as I'm cabbage sounding.

I got mine from here: https://www.themetalstore.co.uk/products/16swg-1-6mm-thick-mild-steel-rectangular-box-section. They're in West Yorkshire and do click and collect, they'll cut to size for free too.

Thanks Chris. That's a much better price and not too far for a 'Jolly'. I feel a trip coming on.

I now have my steel. Came very quickly from Metal Mania.

Got ERW 75x25 x1.5    three lengths of 1.5m and 2 of 2m. Total price (and free delivery) £109.62

No idea if that is the cheapest, but they were the only ones showing 75x25 on their pages, when I looked.
I don't want to bore you all with the details, here. But if you are interested, have a look at my blog https://peteskart.blogspot.com/

Bear in mind that Mike Stevenson has posted that they only chose that size because it was readily to hand. It's not the only game in town. Of course all previous prices have been affected by Mr Putin.
We must avoid torturing our brains with false problems, it occupies but it can annoy. In jest!
