CAREFUL!
Make sure you purchase wheels with SDG in the description as they have a much greater variety of bearing availability. To get good bearing choices, 35 mm bore is what you want. The link Stefan has posted has that, but always check before buying, or ask for a bearing number and check against dimensions. 37 mm bearing OD doesn't have a lot of choices.
Chris, please post your spreadsheet.
Bearing boys are a great source, and very helpful.

I spoke to 'fun-bikes' earlier in the week, they said 17" wheels should be back in stock in about 2 weeks.

Hey Rhys. I see we have a forum for bits and pieces, you could kick it off?

Amongst everything else, I have been looking for some suitable wheels for my project, the 1908 French GP winning Mercedes. Interesting when I scale the car down to have a 66" wheelbase, the wheels come out at 17" in diameter! I was thinking about the 1906 GP Renault and got very into that because in practice, it ran on wire wheels, changing to Mitchellin rims for the race.
The Mercedes however only ran on Mitchellin wheels with detachable rims on the back and non-detachable on the front.
I decided I would make the Mitchellin wheels myself and use a steel 17" rim.
I have just come back from 'Central Wheels' in Coleshill, with a set of four brand new rims, without the spoke blisters and undrilled. Perfect for what I need, £236. I recommend them, they can do anything, great shop.
I want the wooden spokes to be 30mm wide but that's way beyond my laser cutters ability so I am going to cut some 15mm thick Hickory (I bought for the purpose) on my laser-cutter and try that. If its OK then Ill cut two, glue the two together and see how we go then quick dabble with a spokeshave and see how it looks. If it works OK then work can commence on the remaining 47!
The wooden rims will be made in a similar manner on the laser but will need four laminates of 12.5mm thick in American Yellow Pine.
I will use the rims as the outer section of the building jug with a 1" dia rod supporting the spokes in the centres.
I'll then drill the rims to suit, get them powder-coated, then screw and glue them to the Mitchellin wheels.
I'll start with the back wheels because they look great and I can't wait to get started to prove the design really.
The chassis is all aluminium as is the bodywork and whilst I have drawn it all up, my pal at Shapecraft in Hinckley is going to make the chassis and when I have done all the loops for the bodywork he will English wheel the body panels, wire edge all raw edges and weld it all up.  Seems years away but it won't be I promise.

I've attached the bearing tabulation as requested by Rhys, some additions to the original one with info on the Honda ANF125 wheels which are readily available, new or second hand. What struck me is it should be possible to use the 32mm o/d bearings in wheels that use 35mm ones, with a sleeve of 35mm o/d 1.5mm wall tube, might need some bearing lock. That means there are 25mm bore bearings that could be used in rear wheels.

Bearings in rear wheels Chris? Why?
Can you post that to the "Getting Started" section so it stays visible.

For the free running one, with the pit bike wheels it's then only a matter of removing or fitting 4 bolts to change over from fixed to free. It's also a cheap and easy way to locate the wheel on the axle radially anyway.

TBH Chris, I would recommend forgetting the idea of a free wheel, especially if there is to be almost zero friction. The car will drive hard one way with drive, need considerable steering input to stay straight, and equally vicious the opposite way on braking. The only time the CK runs straight is on a neutral throttle input, ie no acceleration, no lift off.
It's not a great idea, except if you have the need to turn tight circles slowly. Most have abandoned that idea some years ago.

I have to agree with Rhys, from the limited use I have had with the MG to date, I will definitely be changing the rear drive to both wheels.
When accelerating and braking hard, the single driven wheel causes a lot of pull on the steering and hard cornering between left and right is unpredictable, (could be my driving of course!).

I'm trying to find a new source for the 17" x 1.6" steel pit bike rim with the SDG hub.   It may need some group purchasing to make it worthwhile for a supplier.   I'd be aiming for about £25-£30 without a tyre or tube.  Can you let me know if you'd be interested.

If you can get that kind of price, put me down for four please.
Although the bigger question is how will I be able to hide them from 'her indoors' !!!

I would be in too. It would be very nice to find a buyer for the 14" ones I have here, and they are that price.
