Ian & Nick,
I had the kart up on a stand and was standing over it when it let go, nothing really went flying part of the coil (with the broken mount) ended up on top of the engine.  The cowl contained everything else, magnet pieces and the metal plate which covers it.  The cowl was slightly bent and shows a small puncture hole.  As I didn't have a tachometer on it I don't know what kind of revs it was pulling but quite high, I had removed the governor and put a 4 degree advance wood-ruff key in place of the original.
The engine was an old 196cc that had been used on a lawnmower at one stage if it's checkered life, there was quite a bit of rust on the surface to which the magnet was attached.
I hope this helps and if you want to chat about it please feel free to call me.

Tech Forum / Kaboom blown engine
« on: 04 Dec 25, 08:52 am »
I had an interesting morning last week, I installed a 4 degree ignition advance key, the engine started well and with it warmed up I decided to see how it revved up, the kart was on a stand and I got quite the surprise.
The flywheel magnet decided to break loose, nobody hurt but my wallet took a hit.
I wonder if any other members have experienced a similar thing.

Off Topic / Honda clones

As Honda clones with a 3/4" output shaft are becoming harder to find, is there a torque converter out there that will fit the now shorter 20mm output shafts ?

Tech Forum / TAV belt slipping
« on: 20 Jul 25, 08:28 am »
The belt slips on the secondary pulley on my TAV, it is an intermittent slip and sounds like a machine gun and produces a large vibration. It does it under heavy load/acceleration and at most speeds, it has done it since installation so it isn't something that  just started.  I have had the thing apart and put back together several times without any change the only thing I notice is that the flat part of both pulleys do not line up exactly and I'm wondering if the spacer on the crankshaft is the wrong size.
Any help would be appreciated.

Jim,
If something could be arranged for later in the season I'd be definitely interested in attending.

Tech Forum / Re: Billet Flywheel - Not Allowed
« on: 10 Mar 25, 01:28 pm »
While I can appreciate that you would like a pause, do you not want any feedback?

"I don't have a dog in this fight" I do have an opinion.

If the objection to billet flywheels is one of cost and not performance enhancement I was unaware that there was a maximum amount allowed for a build.

Will we soon be required to submit a detailed list of every component and it's cost?

I am reading from the back of the Cyclekart GB flyer "As a driving machine, the Cyclekart formula loosely limits certain aspects of the cars to maintain good sporting performance without jeopardising the light-hearted nature of these machines and the people who build them.

We might be veering away from the true light-hearted spirit of cyclekarting.

Please could I reserve the number 14 for my build, it is part of the tail number of my last Cessna aeroplane.

The new year is looking quite promising and it begins to look more like a Cycle kart, wheels always help.
The tyres are not exactly what I had in mind but the price was right and they'll do for a start.
Because I have such limited space (garden shed) I can only work on one end at a time and have to dismantle it to turn it around.  I set the engine and torque converter last week and it seems to fit quite nicely but had to remove it to get the front end.
